Talking BES 4.1 wireless synch calendar, tasks, etc

Please Login to Remove!

We have recently deployed a 90 day trial of BES 4.1 and we are using Exchange 2000 and Blackberry 7100i series. Our email is synching fine and new tasks, calendar appts, and memos are synching from Outlook to the BB. Now when I go to delete from the BB it never synch's those changes back to Outlook? It only works from Outlook to the handheld, and I have setup the handheld to allow the wireless synch for these options? Any thoughts on what I could be missing to cause this to only work 1 way? I am not using the desktop manager for synching I am strictly testing wireless sync capabilities right now.

On another note is there any options on the BES to allow for LDAP use so I can extract our global address list to the handhelds?

thanks in advance.

Usually, the 1-way synchronization of data signifies that the permission are not set correctly for the service account. Check and make sure the account has the appropriate rights as defined in the installation instructions.

the domainname\besadmin account i created appears to have necessary permissions set in ESM at the server level. I also provided Exchange View Only rights in ESM. Anything else I should look for in regards to permissions?

I assume that the Handheld is setup in "bidirectional" mode. If you browse this forum, you will see that you are not the first one with this problem...

In the software tools, there is a software to test Exchange account right that may identify problem or confirm that everything is fine. Look for the IEMSTEST.exe in BES tools directory.

It may also be caused by one of thoses obscure esoteric reason or bug.

The handheld is configured by default to delete email messages on the handheld only, so that's why the deletes don't 'synch' back to Outlook.

This configuration can be changed to delete on both the handheld and Outlook:
  • while in Messages, chose Options from the menu
  • Open Email Reconciliation
  • Highlight - Delete On: Handheld
  • Select 'Change Option' from the menu
  • Select 'Mailbox & Handheld'
  • Save the change

From now on, items deleted on the handheld will also be deleted from Outlook.

Hope this helps!

Bidirectional is enabled and i ran that test and everything came back OK no errors at all? Brian, email for users is reconciling fine from handhed to Outlook and vice versa. The issue is from handheld calendar to Outlook calendar I cannot get those changes to sync?

So it is calendar that is not synching? Search the posts for wireless calendar sync -- there are a couple threads that offer fixes - worked for me with my users. One was called "one-way calendar sync" (I think). There are two suggested fixes - one having to do with permissions and one with the cdo.dll files on the BES and Exchange - the latter fixed us.

Sorry, sean, the words 'Calendar entries' were missing from your OP, as in:

so I mistook your post as deleted messages were not reconciling.

@ community - Can Calendar reconciliation failures be caused by corrupt Service Book files?

I ended up getting this to work by adding in the service acct into the local admin group on the exchange box, but this I must have overlooked in the install guide as I never saw that step. Once I made this changed it worked great, and I could also perform LDAP lookups from the handheld to my GAL in Exchange 2k.

Thank you to everyone for the assistance...

We had problems where the permissions set in the ESM on the server weren't propogating down to the mail store and public folders, even though it looked like it did. Try explicitly setting the Administer Information Store, Send As and Receive As permissions on the mail store and public folders.

Thanks, just checked that out and propogation seems to have worked properly. My last issue as of now is that I cannot seem to get my tasks, memopad, and address book to sync from Outlook to BB or vice versa. Could this still be rights if my email and calendar are working bidirectional right now?

Thanks!

I was looking at the options on my 7100i and for tasks, memo pad, and address book I have no option for wireless sync, shouldn't there be something there for at least desktop? Am I missing something?

Have you gone through Enterprise Activation? I believe that has to occur before the wireless sync options show up - at least that is true for 7200s and I think 7100s (I don't have as many 7100s here as 7200s so I don't recall)

Acording to the install instructions the BES Service account does not need to be a local admin on the Exchange Box, but on the BES box unless you are running BES on the Exchange box which I believe is not supported and/or recommended by RIM because you need to have a MAPI profile on the BES.

I removed myself from the BES, and then reactivated myself on the server by sending out a new password, and that worked just fine. After that still no option for wireless sync for tasks and such.

BES and Exch 2000 are on separate boxes, maybe I'm just thinking it worked and it's coincidental that the wireless calendar sync took at the same time I added the besadmin to the local admin group on Exch 2000? I'll take this up with RIM support to see what they recommend.

I was able to get the wireless sync options to tasks, memos, and address book. What I did was power down my BB, and then pulled the battery and SIM. Inserted both back into place, powered on and then voila the options appeared and work now!

You could have also deleted the desktop synch service book and then clicked to un-delete the service book to force a slow synchronization with the BES. This process will also force a device to re-register if the device information does not appear in the handheld configuration tool.

Also if you ever experience any other wireless sync issues and your permissions are set properly be sure to verify that the cdo and mapi dll files on the BES(s) are at the same level or higher as the Exchange servers.
