Default BES 5 SRP Change

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all..

Long time lurker but first time poster so be gentle!

Using the migration tools, I have just completed a migration of our BB infrastructure from BES 4.1.5 to BES 5.02 (MR3) in our Domino environment

I was given 3 temporary SRP Keys to apply to the new BES Servers, and now I have completed the migration, plan to move the permanent SRP Keys from the old environment to the new BES 5 Servers.

My concern is this:
We have a number of users in remote offices that have had problems receiving Service Books. For these users, we have had to wait until they are in a region with a stable telco before migrating them to ensure they receive these service books and so can continue to send and receive mail from their device.

I am aware that when I change the SRP Key details, the BES will want to push the new SRP keys to the Blackberry devices via the Service books.

What will become of those users that do not receive the new Service Books?
Will their devices still work if they have not received them?

I have been advised that SB updates occur every 4 hours for 7 days until confirmed, but I am unsure what would happen if a users device is on but can't fully receive the SBs..

This was completely overlooked, and with our Temp SRP keys due to expire on 11th April, I am looking at ways of minimising the damage!

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated..

A migration kit waould have saved you from this trouble.

I have no good easy fix for you.

Warn users now that it will be done and possible you have to send out activation emails to those not connected very well. maybe you could get people to use wifi in poor reception area if they have it.

Basically if they don't get the new service book they will be SOL. Without the service book update the BlackBerry will continue to communicate to the old SRP.

SOL?
I'm hoping that this is an acronym for continue to work!

I take it then that those devices that do not receive the new SRP details in their service books will no longer work?

Really wish we had been given the option of the migration pack as it would have saved us a lot of hassle..

Thanks for your help guys..

From the Urban Dictionary:

Quote:
SOL

Acronym for the words of "Shit Out of Luck." It is used in reference to the state of having run out of all other options, wherein the remaining situation is less than desirable.

Had to bite the bullet..
Am migrating SRP keys as we speak!

I have advised all relevant parties of possible issues and how to resolve them.

First server went ok, and I was back onlin within 10 minutes. That BES has 41 users on it.

The second server is experiencing a spike in CPU and has been for over an hour. Im guessing the BES is busy processing etc but we only have 243 users on the server..
As a result, mail lookups are extremely slow, as is delivery and receipt of new mail.

Think i'm going to give it another 20 / 30 minutes before restarting..
(Any advice / similar experiences here to ease my heart palputations?!)

Snip from KB04744-How to locate and change the SRP ID and SRP Authentication Key

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server services must be running during the process and should not be restarted for at least 4 hours afterward to allow the process enough time to complete

I was debating whether to restart the servers once the change had been made but could see that the BES was frantically activating and sending out SRP change notifications to the devices.

This caused a huge spike in CPU causing all Blackberry Services to almost grind to a halt.

I left it to do its thing and after almost 2.5 hours the CPU settled down and Blackberry services returned to normal.

Something else I came across that may help anyone going through a similar exercise:

If you have a seperate BAS component Server, you will get an error when trying to change SRPs. This is because the BAS doesn't (generally) have a router component installed on it so cannot connect to the BBI (blackberry infrastructure). If you save anyway then it should work (providing the details are correct)

This is covered in blackberry.com - KB26019.
(tried posting the link but can't until I have posted 15 times (?)
