Does it make a difference that you're on Vodafone?

There are people out there on O2 with working setups, so it would seem as though the carrier is irrelevant.

Can I ask who is on o2 network with BIS and if you have wi-fi that works, what are the settings please?

Should the wi-fi work with BIS or is it just with BES?

Settings for what exactly - can you be a bit more specific? If you're talking about info under the Wifi Diagnostics screen, I don't think these can be changed - this are picked up from the wifi connection.

Wifi should work with BIS, and in order to do so you need to refresh your service books which is mentioned somewhere earlier in the thread. However it works for some and not others.

Default Ridiculous state of affairs

As a consumer device, the 8120 on o2 BIS is a joke.

Is it not reasonable to assume that if you buy a wi-fi phone then it should do what it says on the tin?

o2 have told me that 'Wi-Fi on BIS is notorious for crashing, but will work fine on BES, the reason for the hassles with BIS is that o2 do not fully support UMA' (whatever that means).

This 'phone is meant to be a business tool to assist productivity, it has turned out to be the exact opposite. When you buy a hammer, you expect it to work, lets not lose sight that this 'phone is just a tool.

Unless anyone can tell me that o2 have given me incorrect information, it's going back. My mates who have other wi-fi phones have no bother at all.

I have refreshed my service books and HRT etc. as detailed, thanks for that but nothing has changed.

I can't be specific about settings as I don't know what settings need to be checked. I'm a financial advisor, and don't know a huge amount about Blackberry technicals I'm afraid!

So, has anybody on o2 BIS had any success with their 8120 wi-fi set up?

WiFi working on BIS or BES is carrier specific, the carrier has to negotiate a deal with RIM, most will support BES but it seems not all carriers have gone for BIS.

O2 had but it didn't work, it does now.

The only config you can really get wrong is whether you have connected to your WiFi, if you can browse the internet, and you have the WiFi logo in the top right whilst you are doing it then you have everything you need.

Some negotiation is done over the GSM network first which authenticates the WiFi connection and then you can turn off the GSM network and the WiFi will continue to work. Leave it on though, if you have a bright WiFi icon and a green tick for WiFi then all data will route over the WiFi.

There are still a lot of people on o2 BIS that can't get this working still, i don't currently know why but i'll make some enquiries, it would help if someone could confirm they are on o2 BIS, with a defaulted handset on ver 105 and can browse the WiFi as described above but still have a dim icon/yellow tick.

Default Confused and cheesed off!

o2 have just told me that they do not support wi-fi on a normal personal BIS contact, so how is it that some people on BIS are getting wi-fi connectivity?

From the info you have Tailor, it appears that o2 BIS wi-fi should now work, this is opposite to what o2 have said. Their argument is that they are not a wi-fi provider, they just sell the handsets! What a load of carp! (oversized goldfish).

They said if you want wi-fi you have to take out a BES contract, which costs more....of course.

So does anyone have a definitive answer. Is it any wonder that these mobile phone companies get accused of sharp practices, and here in the UK we just bend over, grit our teeth and take it!

Hi Geezer,
I appreciate your frusrations, trust me i have been there!
If you want the full story then you need to read this thread or at least my posts in it.
The short version is that i have been trying to get this working with O2 and RIM since before Christmas.
O2 have paid RIM to supply WiFi to their BIS customers and so it should work, however, no carrier supplies a high level of support to BIS customers, the knowledge is all in the BES team so you will struggle talking to them.
I had a route in at quite a senior level and got support from RIM and O2 until it finally starting working a few weeks back. Since then it seemsto be working for about 50% of users, at this stage i don't know whether 50% of people have something wrong at thier handset or something is wrong at O2's end but i am trying to find out.
Best advice i can give you at this stage is either to wait for me to get some news or kick off at O2, if someone tells to it doesnt work then explain that it does for a friend of yours! either that or call again and speak to someone different that does know it's supposed to work.
if you read this thread you will find people that have been told by O2 that the issue was being worked on and they were waiting for a fix. Well that fix has come now so I don't know what else is a miss.
I will post back more as i find out.

Hi Geezer1,

I was in the same boat as you; I was told by 02 that they didn't have a WiFi offering. Luckily for me, I was one of those whose 8120s worked perfectly after Tailor's tenacious work with his contacts. We have 2 8120s in the family and they are now both working as they should.

Like you, I was ready to ditch the units at the first available opportunity, but I have to say the difference now is dramatic.

I guess what I am saying is that if it works for some of us, it should work for all and you should be close to a solution. Hopefully there's a glitch somewhere that will be fixed as soon as possible.

Hi all, I too am having the same problem as you guys, I have contacted O2 numerous times, I might as well have contacted Chester Zoo and spoken to the chimps. Anyway, I found your thread and I'm pleased to see I'm not alone. One thing I've noticed is that most of your device software is 4.3.0.105, mine is only v4.3.0.94, if I look at the O2 website, the latest version is earlier than mine, can somebody tell me where I get the latest version from.

Thanks....Mike

Well, my software version is v4.3.0.67 it seems, and I'm on a BIS tariff, but just like tornadodivine in an earlier post my Service Book Provisioning now shows

UID: BESPRV-EU
CID: PROVISIONING

Does this help?

Default Twerp of the week!

Well, they say that it takes a big man to admit when he is wrong, and right now I reckon I must be all of 7 foot 6" tall at least!

My 8120 wi-fi is working - hurrah!

For reasons that I wont bore you with, I bought this 'phone for my daughter but I have been using it with my sim card from my 8100 (non wi-fi) and she has been using the old 8100 on her sim card which is provisioned for wi-fi on the 8120.

I swapped over the sim cards to how they should be, i.e. her sim card in the 8120 and my sim card in the original 8100 and the wi-fi burst into life!

In my defence, O2 were feeding me all sorts of duff gen, (I did actually tell them I swapped the sim cards but it obviously didn't register and they said I needed to go across to BES for the wi-fi to work!)

If it helps, this is the set up:-

v4.3.0.94 handset software
BESPRV-EU service book provisioning
O2 BIS
No VPN profile is required
Blackberry INfrastructure has green ticks against Connecting/Authenticating router/Authenticating server.

Just another point, I think I read on this site that the wi-fi browser initially uses the mobile network momentarily to connect up when using the browser before it uses the wi-fi. This is not the case on my set up. I turned off the mobile network and the browser used the wi-fi to connect up fine.

Thanks very much for all your help guys and sorry to waste your time, it's doing exactlly what it said on the tin!

I'm of course pleased for you, Geezer1, but still confused.

Does this mean that a SIM does more than identify the subscriber to the network, it identifies the type of device as well?
