Question using a Blackberry as a hotspot!?

Please Login to Remove!

ok. Im technician but have completely ignored PDA phones altogether. Ive never needed one untill now. So im a complete blackberry newbie but a tech head.
The other day i was helping my mom and her boyfriend with thier laptops and one of thier phones is broadcasting an insecure wifi signal with the ssid of "myphone" They have even been using it with the laptop and it works great.

I would like to get the same setup but everyone at the Verizon store has no idea what im talking about.

just so im clear its a blackberry broadcasting a wifi signal.
*not* a blackberry connecting to a wifi signal.
The service is either AT&T or Verizion.

any info will be great.

It's not possible to do this with any BlackBerry device.

You can use your BlackBerry to tether.

when you use a blackberry to tether can you recieve or make calls while its connected and transfering data?

my clients call me for quotes and i would need to use both. currently i use a pcmcia aircard from AT&T and find it to be a bit pricey.

I cant seem to get straight or reliable answers at the verizon store.

The only BlackBerry that is capable of using voice and data at the same time is the Bold.

Wirelessly posted

So all of this in English is saying I cannot use the wifi enabled phones to get internet on my laptop. BC I know that my dad's Sony Erickson performs this task. And being able to do that would be handy even tho I wouldn't be able to answer or make calls. And is flash available with the wifi phones?

You can do this on Windows Mobile and Symbian easily. There are three programs that I know of: jokuspot, wmfrouter, and walkinghotspot. There is no Blackberry equivalent. You can tether a Blackberry with a USB cable. If your carrier blocked the capacity, google on a little program called "shark modem."

If you really want wifi, go surf over to cradlepoint.com. They have a pocketrouter that is battery powered which can turn a Blackberry into a hotspot.

With all of the software solutions I've mentioned above, the programs only allow a wifi connection in ad hoc mode. None of them actually emulate an accesspoint. This is fine for a laptop or an ipod touch, but for example my Sirius Stilleto won't connect to such a connection and neither will my uma enabled handset. With Cradlepoint, it works like a charm.
