Hi,

i am just wondering what are you guys doing with all the old, broken, not wanted blackberry's?

I have like 10 pearls, many 8700, a few 88xx just laying in my drawer.
I am using it for parts or replacing housings on it and re-using them.

What do you do?

I'm thinking about auctioning them on ebay. I've got a drawer full of 7250's, and a handful of other models all put out to pasture. The problem is trying to corral that money when it comes in and direct it to a budget line item where we can use it again, instead of it going into a general fund where it's never seen or heard from again

Good idea but can not do it in my company.

Will your company allow you to donate them to charity? That's my other option if it turns out that we will not have access to the proceeds.

yeah thats possible but to much paper work.
I think i will use them for parts. I actually made one BB 8800 from 3 dead 8800

The paperwork is, for the most part, a burden on the part of the recipient. Unless a tax deduction for your company is too much paperwork for them.

Some police stations collect old cell phones and give them to women who have been victimized by domestic violence. They use them for emergency 911 calls. No tax deduction or other material benefit, but there is the good karma you generate!

you can also reach to the women's domestic violence centers directly. We have one that has put a donation bin in our office. Just wipe the devices and pass them along.

You can only part out so many before it becomes a hassle. Also, electronics recycling places can take them too. Not as altruistic, but at least they don't go into a hole in the ground.

Excellent idea! Though I'm curious.... why can't a corporation take a tax credit for this donation. I do recall seeing something about fair market value not being as arbitrary a figure as it once was. But wouldn't a receipt for said donated items signed by the receiver suffice in the event of an audit?

The collection methods I've seen are very informal. Like a big plastic jar that people simply drop their old mobiles into. If you could get a receipt for what you donate I suppose you could assign a value and have a tax deduction.

I have a box full of 8700's and 8800's. Some work, some don't. I also have a Verizon 7130 that a 'separated' employee returned - except we didn't buy it for her. It was her own. Works great though!

Don't know what I'll do with all those.

For the Sprint and Nextel devices, I use the Sprint BuyBack program they have to send old equipment back and we get credits on our corporate account. About $10K last year alone.

if you have a relationship with a local charity, it is likely that there is a form that you can fill out for in-kind donation form. usually that;s all it takes to get the fair market value. I would think that if you do this on a regular basis, they would be willing to work with you on the forms/receipts deal.

We are going through an internal audit and we do not have a disposal procedure. I just keep collecting and use the old one for parts. So far I have recovered about 10 8700's due to broken screens, etc. I have boxes full of 7290's... and even some old 6000 series....
