BlackberryOS 4.0 is now confirmed to support a subset of MIDP 2.0;

Also, JBenchmark.com MIDP 2.0 benchmark software works most of the way, completing 4 out of 5 tests on my 7280 running 4.0.0.124 before crashing. Also, JBenchmark.com MIDP 1.0 apparently reports my device has the MIDP 2.0 profile. You can download JBenchmark OTA at http://wap.jbenchmark.com

Where did you get that OS 4.0 supports MIDP 2.0? I don't know for sure but from what I have seen in the RIM JDE 4.0 there is still no full support for MIDP 2.0. Realistically ( minus gaming ) the blackberry platform already had most of the MIDP 2.0 stuff available ( or at least it was possible ). If you asked me the JSRs for MIDP 2.0 tryed to duplicate what blackberry already offered ( again minus the games ).

BrickBreaker 4.0 with Arkanoid-style background graphics on my handheld seems to have fast graphics that runs at 30 frames per second, and runs faster than my old handheld. It's almost as if it is using a gaming API now?

But if you are right and it is not yet supported, then obviously it will happen eventually. Charm 7100t should probably support gaming API's due to its marketing to consumers. Eventually, RIM is going to have to support gaming API's, including MIDP 2.0 -- whether they like it or not. Us enterprise customers don't need gaming, but us consumers do want gaming! RIM can just make it a configurable security option; enable/disable MIDP 2.0, enable/disable gaming API, etc. To allow corporations some control over gaming in corporate use. They can make it a marketing feature -- "we now support gaming in all prosumer-purchased Blackberries; but we also allow administrators to turn off ability to run videogames for security, battery-life, and office productivity reasons"

Although the BlackBerry CPU is relatively slow, it is not too slow to support gaming, considering what www.magmic.com accomplished, and what BrickBreaker 4.0 has accomplished;

That has been around since 3.7. Just not released part of the general upgrade. Not 100% so I'll look into it, but my first guess is that no it doesn't fully support MIDP 2.0.

You sure the unreleased 3.7 BrickBreaker looks the same as BrickBreaker 4.0? The BrickBreaker 4.0 looked better than the publicly released BrickBreaker in OS 3.7 with faster graphics, smoother framerate, and more graphics, animated brick explosions, full screen flashes, and more prominent animations than the publicly released BrickBreaker in OS 3.7. And, there is no background graphics in the publicly released BrickBreaker in OS 3.7....

Although, some argue playability of BrickBreaker in OS 3.7 is better :D

In either case, is a subset of MIDP 2.0 supported?

Completely off topic -- Mark, I can't help myslef -- Brickbreaker 3.7 has MUCH better playability features. No comparison at all. However, you are correct that Brickbreaker 4.0 is INCREDIBLY more advanced from a visual/graphics point of view. Just my $0.02.

Yes they re-version to match the release version. You are probably using the official beta release version. I am using the RIM internal version. I'll see what I can find out. After that article in the g&m I guess inquiring minds would like to know. :D

Just looked at the 4.0 javadocs and yes the blackberry supports MIDP 2.0 gaming (i.e. javax.microedition.lcdui.game), but not some of the other packages.

I just did tests of JBenchmark MIDP 2.0 and 4 of the tests work successfully, then it crashed on the 5th test.

Do you know whether the new OS supports JSR-82 as part of MIDP 2.0? JSR-82 allows MIDlets to use Bluetooth.

JSR-82 is not a MIDP 2.0 requirement, but an addon to the MIDP 2.0 specs. The 4.0 API does not support JSR-82.
