what happens if a certain mobile network doesn't support a particular BB model? is there any "global" software that adresses that ? or is there a way of manualy configuring it ?

You need to be more exact in your question.

What do you mean "doesn't support"? Doesn't offer BBs at all? Doesn't offer a BB dataplan? Doesn't have your specific model in their inventory?

carrier supports BBs but not my model (9550 storm 2); when i download an OS i do not have the option of choosing software from my carrier (orange romania). they do support the new OS 6 devices but as for the older ones there are only a few posibilities. i also own a 8120 pearl and it works perfectly coz they do have software for that.

so i had to go ahead and instal the the verizon OS 5.xxx (dunno the numbers) but of course this way my browser doesn't work if i'm not around a hotspot area

i just can't figure out why RIM hasn't provided manual settings so that problems like these can be resolved; coz i do have all the settings that i would need for internet (they have them posted on their site) but since u cannot configure a lot of options on a BB device this means i 'm not able to use my phone with all the features

It has nothing to do with the software.
If they don't publish the SERVICE BOOKS for your device, then you will have issues and will have to find them and manually add them. It is a bit of a painful process.

RIM wants you to go through your carrier, and the carriers publish the Service Books only for the devices they sell.

It has nothing to do with the version of the software you are running.

Not so easy. Your vendor supports the 8120 - so they pushed them to you.

You need to find 9550 service books that will work with your vendor. Search around - someone must have done it already.

Or just get a device that your carrier supports.

yeah right... nice advice! that's like offering someone candy when they want icecream

anyway i figured it out; i figured how to extract, EDIT and upload service books from one device to another. it works even if they are completely different models. in my case, i transfered service books from the pearl 8120 to the 9550 storm 2. the one thing u have to be aware of is that u have to enable legacy SB restore mode in the service book menu so that u can modify anything

useful tools if anyone needs to do something like this: MagicBerry, BB desktop manager, JL_cmder (optional)
