I had an unfortunete suprise this afternoon. Reached into my pocket to check my BB, and I must have banged into something while it was in my pocket,. Obvious point-impact on the LCD, minor crack in the cover glass. Basically, the LCD is completly ruined, and nothing can display...I'll try and get a pic online to illustrate. The phone appears to be unaffected beyond the screen, calls still work, backlight, vibrate, sync to PC.. as far as I can tell anyway.

Can't get a hold of my provider today (national holiday) but if they won't replace the screen.. is this a user-replaceable part? If I can get the TorX screwdriver that is of course...

FYI it is a brand new 7250

Thanks to any help
Bru...

this is just on aside (don't mean to hijack the thread)
I went to rim to watch the production and lets just say that there are only 3 automated process in the production line. The rest is manually labor. Thats why they only make 100/hour out in kitchener where i live
lol
And we wonder why they cost so much. I always tell my buddies that they should ship them out overseas and pump them out. Blackberrys should be sub 200 if anything. (canadian)

GoodLuck with the screen replacement

Low monthly payment...no deductible. Saved me twice :o) Just a suggestion..

Default Silly question about screen change

Have a 7250 that the backlight doenst work on (purchased used). Have checked settings and even tried out BBlight for good measure, but still no luck. Tried taking to Verizon who says talk to BB, and BB says talk to Verizon, and all I want to do is a have a backlight :(

Thoughts on a screen replacement solving the issue?

I dropped my 7250 last night under the seat of the car and I slid the seat forward to reach it... big mistake, the seat pinched the very top edge of the screen and it cracked right clean down, it looks like it bled a horrible death :(

I may have to go with a replacement off that link if ebay doesn't pan out. I purchased an equipment warranty but 1. I cannot be without my phone, even if I can't see the emails, I can hear them come in and go to a computer and 2. I seriously doubt them giving me a fix anyways. I am competent enough to repair it (and start putting it back in the holster... grrr)

Default Blackberry 8700 Replacement Instructions

Ok, I had a broken screen on my blackberry 8700 and I googled around and found a replacement screen from bbrepairshop dot com. The screen was $150 plus $10 shipping. After I received it I found out that it doesn't come with instructions, and the unscrupulous buggers are trying to charge $10 to download the instructions. I refused and figured it out myself after about 1 hour. Here is how to open up the 8700 and replace the screen.

Taking it apart:

First, you need a Torx style screw driver to get the screws out. I happened to have one that I bought for some other purpose.. I think it was about $1.50 from home depot. Take the battery shroud off, and then take the battery out. There are 3 torx screws on the back of the device, remove them all. Once you have the screws out you can pop off the back. There are two small slots on the left and right side about half way up the casing. Take a small flat head screw driver and press firmly into the slot to release it's hinge. You may need to grasp the side of the device with one hand while you press in with the other. That way you can pull the side up enough so that it doesn't relatch once you pull out the screw driver. Once you unlatch both sides and free the back half, lift the back half off the blackberry. You will now see four more torx screws. Remove these screws and the front face will come loose. Remove the face which will have the keyboard inside of it, and the plastic earphone piece at the top.

Replace the screen:

The screen is attached via four white tabs, and a small computer ribbon at the top. There is a clear plastic peice of tape over the computer ribbon. Pull that off. Then gently pullback the tabs and loosen the screen carefully. You will probably need to press gently with a screwdriver on some of the white tabs to dislodge the screen. The computer ribbon slides out and is held under the interface tab by friction. Once you remove the old screen, put the new screen in place and slide the computer ribbon underneath the interface tab. Press gently to secure the new screen's tabs to the circuit board. Place the clear piece of plastic back over the interface tab.

Putting it back together:

Place the front face on a table face down with the keyboard and ear phone inside of it. Hold the circuit board in your hand with the screen facing down and the USB shroud with your thumb so it doesn't fall out. Reatch the front of the blackberry from the top side first, there are two little notches up there. Front should fit into place, hold it with your finger while you replace the four screws. Now you can snap the back on and screw in the three screws, finally put the battery back in and the battery cover. You're done!
