For some reason I am getting weird capitalization - like in the middle of a word - like tHat - or thiS - does any one have any idea what I can do to fix it?

don't depress that key (which is being capitalized) quite so long.

The longer key press capitalizes the letter.

that is the strangest part - I am not holding down any cap key at all - it does it all by itself

Deress any key, say the A key much longer than a second, and it defaults to a capital A.

No, that is one of the features of the Blackberry.
