Default BIS 3.0 coming soon to a carrier near you .....

Please Login to Remove!

From the BoyGenius report via Engadget (take it for what its worth):

BBLeaks got their hands on some RIM training documentation that details new features included in the yet-to-be-scheduled BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 3.0 update. Some of the documented improvements include:

* Gmail read/unread status will now sync on handsets with Enhanced Google Mail Plug-in and BlackBerry OS 4.6 or higher
* Create and delete labels on device with Enhanced Google Mail Plug-in and BlackBerry OS 4.6 or higher
* Support for additional attachment types, including: OpenDocument presentations (.odp), OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods), OpenDocument text (.odt), OpenDocument text templates (.ott), and Windows Media Audio (.wma)
* BlackBerry smartphone users will be instructed to contact their specific carrier and will be
provided with carrier contact information in HTML and WAP error messages.

The Gmail functionality and extra attachment support are definitely welcome additions to BISxxx8217; repertoire; it does, unfortunately, leave all other BIS IMAP users out in the cold.

Interesting, I do remember way back in 2005 for BIS user was able to read emails on carrier BIS site. I do miss those old features like this.

I would think that services like Yahoo and Gmail offer much more then the carrier.blackberry.com emails? Especially nowadays.

Is there any more news as to when this is going to hit carriers?

I thought the PDF document which was leaked indicated early Feb for Asia, and early then late March for Europe and USA respectively. However, I haven't seen any hint that Asian carriers are releasing it yet.

Anyone have any better idea?

Thanks!

Here is an update. This weekend maybe?

BerryReview is reporting that one of its solid connections has confirmed the arrival of BIS 3.0 sometime in the next week. Wexxx8217;ve already told you about some of the leaked features of BIS 3.0, but here is a quick recap:

* True two-way synchronization with Gmail
* Ability to create Gmail labels with Advanced Gmail Plugin
* Support for Windows Media Audio files
* Support of OpenOffice files
* Carrier specific error messages with relevant contact information

Not exactly a blow-your-socks-off type upgrade but a few niceties for those Gmail, WMA, and OpenOffice lovers out there.

The Crackberry article refers to an email from RIM suggesting 21 March roll out. I assume that's NA (which was what was suggested by the original PDF and also seems to follow from the location of the website link quoted, which is na blackberry). Hopefully that means Europe will get it in the next 10 days or so.

Generally Europe the first weekend, North America the second and Asia the third, or that is the way it has been the last couple of rollouts as I recall.

I guess it will get here when it gets here though. When data goes down, maybe we will know?

Is there anything that one needs to do in order to upgrade to 3.0? For example, deleting your gmail address from BIS and then re-adding it. Or is this just automatically pushed through?

It is all done by RIM and your carrier. As far as anything else, we wil have to wait and see. This is still all conjecture and rumor.

Well,

the BIS update is here and still 2 way sync is missing. I heard the feature has not made it into 3.0 and we have to wait until 3.1 to get it. Such a shame, was so much looking forward to 2 way syncing gmail.

My company uses google apps premier and it would have been a godsend feature. I hate waiting....grmmmpf

That is incorrect. You are off by 6 or 7 days, but it is in march

Then they are incorrect. I do support for a few carriers, and that leaked document looks very familiar to the material we received about the upcoming change.

Again, i cannot say a date since its NDA but those dates are off.

*EDIT* it may have been pushed back, but i haven't been advised of such

In any event, it will happen when it happens and we won't be able to do anything about it. Oh maybe, you can write your Congressman and Senator, but then I doubt that they will be much help either.
