Default UMA working in US only

Please Login to Remove!

Folks,

My T-Mobile BB Flip works fine via uma over wifi when in the US. I was trying to get uma working in Hongkong airport but with no luck. The wifi worked fine though. On the display, I had the name of the wireless network on the top with the "wifi" icon BUT no "uma".

Any idea why uma would not work outisde the US? I haven't unlocked yet, could this be a problem? (This is the 8220 Pearl Flip version).

Thanks all...

I believe UMA is a feature of T-Mobile USA only. I didn't think it worked outside the U.S. Somebody chime in and correct me if I'm wrong. (Won't be the first time!)

I used UMA when I was in the hotel in Paris. Made calls back home for free....

My SIP account refused to connect via the same wifi access on my laptop.

It might be a firewall type issue with certian WIFI access points....kinda like how VPN doesnt work sometimes depending on the network..

I think its all on how the network is setup (something you will have no control over)

UMA is a feature of TMO US but many users have been successful at using it outside the county and some people specifically purchase UMA phones for this reason. There may be some wifi networks it won't work on but it has nothing to do with being out side the US.

Folks, I was able to have UMA working internationally. Just to be sure, I turned OFF the local network and was able to call US without any issue. This is the main reason for getting the blackberry, served the purpose...

2 things might have helped, 1. Strong wifi signal - this seems to be important of UMA, and 2. Unlocking the phone (no way to verify this.. but still guess so ) ..

thx all for the replies...

It works on some carriers and doesn't work with others. At least that's my experience globally.

There needs to be certain ports open for UMA to work. Most hotels will have them open from my experience, but it seems a select few places such as hospitals will not have them open.

The following ports need to be open for wi-fi calling.

Port 4500 should be TCP.

Port 500 UDP
