This was a first for me and, all in all, it went pretty well. It DID address the calendar alerts issue. I'd initially deleted the CICAL entries per RIM as a workaround and my timed calendar alerts did function. But my all-day event alerts did not. According to RIM it was part and parcel of the same issue and the workaround didn't fix everything for everyone.
All-day event alerts as well as timed are now working.
The upgrade took some time but went smooth. I did not have the lowercase "edge" problem. I
did have to re-activate my BES service with my hosted BES.
After restoring the databases, I did find that I had a few emails that would not delete from the 8300. Did a search around this wonderful board and found a solution that worked for me. I backed up the current message database, then simply restored it. Seems there's a "now and then" glitch when upgrading the OS and restoring databases. Once I restored, I was able to delete the pesky emails.
I'm not sure why, given the fact the RIM has obviously released an upgrade to vendors, why one vendor (Optus) releases it while AT&T is still holding onto it. Testing? Or is AT&T too busy with that new phone that came out yesterday? I forget what it's called.
