Default not any mini-usb charger works with the 8310?

For those of you who use the 8310, are you able to sub it with a mini-USB charger from another company or device? My bf has an HTC phone that seems compatible with every mini USB charger we have in the household, such as that of camera chargers and Garmin GPS device chargers. Even my 8310's charger works for him.

My Blackberry 8310 refuses to charge on anything other than a Blackberry charger. However, I'm scanning threads and comments here and on various sites and nobody else seems to be having this issue.

Thanks in advance.

I use Motorola chargers which are slightly less power than the RIM charger. They work fine.

What you should look at is the voltage and amps. You want both around the RIM charger range for the best chance at it working. But maybe your phone is more sensitive than most.

The stock BB charger I have is 5V, 0.7A. That's 5 volts and 0.7 amps of power. Sometimes, like one of my Motorola chargers, it will say something like 550mA instead. That is 550 miliamps, or 0.55 amps.

Going with a higher voltage or amps is not a great idea. A little higher should work, but all you'll get is a slightly faster battery charge with the possibility that it's too much power. For example, my Garmin charger is 5V, 1.0A. So it works, but it's slightly higher amps than the stock BB, so I don't use it to charge my phone.

Using a charger with a higher AMPS rating will not harm the device at all. The device will only draw the current it needs. Better off with a charger that has a higher rating than a lower one.

Voltage is set by the USB (1,2) specification and any charger that adheres to that voltage spec will be fine.

Default You are correct...

My MIO GPS unit has a mini-usb charger, and it didn't work with my Pearl or my Curve. I suspect it has, as noted above, a bit less "juice" than is required...

I use the mini that came with my Razr from almost 3 yrs ago. At work I use a Mini from a Lyra MP3 player that's 5 years old. Both work fine.

Razr chargers work just fine. USB charging works well too. Especially if you couple it with the stock BB charging dock.
