You can go into:

Options > Security Options > General Settings

Change the Password field to Enabled.
When you go back, save the changes and then it will ask you for a new password.

The Security Timeout will determine how long you need to leave the device alone before a password lock will take effect. It wont ask everytime you receive an email/message, but it your not using it for a short period the password will be required to read it anyway.

I have a similar question:
I want to password protect only my pictures on my media card. I fooled around with the various password options and I managed to lock up the phone (with a AT&T idiot on the phone with me). I've been apprehensive about the password ever since. I do not quite understand the various options:
Options -> Media Card -> Encryption mode
So, I do not want the phone to password protect upon power down, nor on a timer. I just want to encrypt the media card data. Anyone know if this is possible> What the the 3 options under Encryption Mode mean?

To the 3 options:

Device: Your device creates an encryption key on the media card
Security password: This uses the General Security password to encrypt your files (Note this will also cause your device to lock after the timeout)
Security password & device: Obviously both of the above.

Now the way I understand it, if you use the device encryption if your media card is taken out of your device it won't be readable. If you use password encryption it should prompt you for the password.

I've never done this and am guessing on the functionality but I think it's pretty close. As it looks, there is no way to simply password protect your files on the media card without setting the general security password.

Oh, now I understand.

The Media Card Encryption is only if you remove the card from the device. If the card is installed in the device, anyone can see the data.
Not what I'm looking for, but thank you for your clarification.

i want to DISABLE the password feature, BUT there is a red lock next to the "enable" so i cant change it, UNLESS somebody here knows how to??

THANK YOU! - I searched RIM's website for half an hour, read the manual (RTFM'd!) and nothing. I emailed a friend who is in RIM's media department to please make this clearer. Why would I select "Enabled" not knowing ahead of time that it would ask for a new password? Blackberry's are great but the usability can still always be improved...
