Is there an easy way on the phone to temporarily stop receiving email? Like when I'm at my computer and don't need my phone to get email?

This is a commonly recurring question. Here is one answer:

Generally speaking, the BlackBerry is not designed to be connected to the network an not receive email. One work-around if you are using BIS 2.x would be to delete, from your handheld, the service books that relate to email delivery when you do not want email delivered and then resend the service books using the BIS 2.x wap portal when you want email delivery to begin again.

Although, in my opinion, that's kind of a clunky solution.

I had the same question and found this in another post:

"It's not really designed for this. However, you can also try Messages->Options->Email Settings and turn Send Email To Handheld off."

I just tested and it seems to work (but maybe I haven't waited long enough ...)

Would selecting Profiles > Phone only achieve the desired result?

Well if this is where you want it switched off, just hook up the BB to the PC (it will charge it too!!) and you can set the device to not forward mail when cradled. If you go into BES, select the device, go to properties, then redirection...you should be given the option "disable message redirection to handheld while in cradle" tick that and I think it should work.

so then, all you need to do, is plug in the USB to the device while at your desk, and emails will stop being sent. easy.

Selecting Phone Only does not stop you from receiving emails, it justs changes the type of notification for phone, SMS, and emails.

Thanks for explaining that. I've only had my BB for a week and a half; the learning curve hasn't been especially steep, (compared to a PPC for example) but there are "one or two" things that I haven't discovered yet.

Is there a way to do this if you are using BIS? While I am at my desk at work, I would rather not receive emails to my 7130, but receive them when I head out of the office.

Warning, lame work-around...

I use BIS and would like the same feature. My (again, lame) solution was to create a profile where nothing happens when an email comes in, or if an event fires. One defense of this method, I have actually found that I wanted to reference an email I received while at the desk and was glad that it had piled up on the 'berry.

Yes...If you are running TMobile's latest software for the 7100 go to Options >Network and select "Data Services" to "Off". I use this for vacation when I want my phone but no email. It turns your "GPRS" to "gprs".

Default Easiest Solution

Best way to do this is to just create a filter to disable any email sent to you.
Go to your inbox - select Options - Email Filters and say:

If no filters apply, send email to handheld: NO

so easy ...
