Default just made a phone call via wi-fi using UMA...

Please Login to Remove!

I had no mobile network coverage yet my number still came up on the persons mobile I rang. Then weirdly my operator name came up on my display (as well as the wi-fi network I was connected to) Does this mean a) I am charged for this? and if I am is there any app like skype which would enable me to make free wi-fi calls? thanks

Yes, you are "charged" for this in terms of minute usage unless you have TMobile's Hot Spot @ Home service or an equivalent. Not sure about the Skype question.

For skype you can use iskoot, but you'll still use your minutes. Would be nice if somebody came out with a skype-like app that uses data.

Does this include the $19.99 Blackberry Unlimited data plan? If you have this, then are you still charged for making Wi-Fi calls?

Yes, minutes are deducted from your monthly bucket. You have to have HotSpot@Home in order to make "free" calls via WiFi.

What about if you are at another T-mobile Hotspot (such as at Starbucks)? Do the minutes still get deducted?

It's a great feature weather you are charged for it or not. If your in an area where the gms signal is weak, you can use wifi instead and it will sound clear. This is good for folks who live in more remote areas away from the 'burbs, and just about any area where tower coverage is weak.

the tmo hotspot at home is only 10 bucks a month. Doesnt the tmoblie hotspot service for like starbucks cost like 19.99. I just hook up my laptop using my 8120 as a modem and i get wifi speeds on my laptop since you get the uma service free on the phone. I think that is a better option.

Whoa, I have set my 8120 to default to Wi-Fi over EDGE and have not been knowing about charges. Can you clarify, map? I am on the myFaves plan. Calls placed to one of myFaves on UMA will NOT be charged, correct? In other words, there is no hidden fee between using EDGE and UMA?

If you are calling your myFaves, you will not be charged - after all, calls made to the MFs are free. The only "hidden fee" between using EDGE and UMA is that if you do not have Hotspot@Home added, then any calls you make to people NOT in your myFaves will be deducted from your usual pool of minutes.

I'm sorry if this sounds dense, but if I have an 8120 w/unlimited data plan, and no hotspot@home, will I be able to make calls over WiFi when I don't have a cell signal? I understand that it will count toward my minutes.

This would be especially beneficial when traveling overseas.

Yes, and it is VERY helpful when dialing from outside the US - when you can get UMA. You may pay roaming charges when outside of the US.

i was in cabo (mexico) two weekends ago -- my cell service didn't work, but i was able to make calls and get my text messages and everything via the wifi connection at the resort, and it was all free.

wait wait wait.

so...let me be perfectly clear on this issue.

with the Tmo blackberry minutes/mail plan....which has 1000 minutes, unlimited data....

with the new 8120 I'm gettin (soon as UPS shows up on Tuesday) I will be able to connect it to my wifi connection...in my house, which has zero signal.....and take/make calls, get emails, text messages, surf the net....

and the only thing I get charged is minutes, without the hotspot@ home service?

No Hotspot plan or whatever required??
