Default Tmo 8120 in other countries question

Please Login to Remove!

I'm trying to get a friend of mine to buy an 8120. He's a pilot for UPS and frequents mostly China, Hong Kong and Korea. I travel a lot to Europe and have had 0 problems, but I've never to been to the Far East. How does the services work over there? Anyone use the @Home feature over there? He normally gets put up in high-end hotels that have wifi.

Thanks,
Tom

I have a buddy who flys for UPS and uses an 8320 over there and says it works great. I think he bought a travel router to take with him, too. Most likely he'd like the 8320 better but the 8120's UMA should work just as good as the 8320. However, I think there are fewer issues with the older 4.2.2 OS that's on the 8320, but it's mostly personal preference.

With the @Home service are calls made while overseas via WiFi still "free" like they are in the US?

Odd i called tmo reps to ask that question but they dont seem to know. So I'll have to wait for my bill and find out it seems. I was able to get wifi in St Marteen at my hotel. Eventhough gprs coverage was spotty i was able to send emails using wifi (the wifi indicator on screen was on showing I was connected while only having gsm coverage) I called tmo to ask about the phone calls but i cant seem to get a definitive answer. so we'll see. I let you know when i get my bill.

Yes, as long as you call a number in the US. If you call a number outside the US you will get billed for an international call. It's just as if you're phone were physically located in the US. Great system!

If your device had a wifi connection but showed anything but UMA (such as GSM or GPRS/EDGE/gprs/edge) then your data was over the wifi and the calls were over GSM. You're going to get billed for the calls unless you show "UMA" on the device.

Oh well.Fortunately I only made 2 brief test calls. Question can you make calls if you turn off mobile network and have wifi but no UMA?

No....if you turn off "mobile network" you have turned off the "mobile network." You will get data only and no phone/sms.
