Default BlackBerrySyncServer.exe and ~100% Utilization

Please Login to Remove!

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has seen issues with BlackBerrySyncServer.exe chewing up the majority of CPU and crippling the BES. I have had a couple of customers who recently applied 5.0.3 MR3 (for Exchange) and saw this behavior immediately thereafter. The following dev task is listed among the known issues in the release notes, but I wasn't sure if it is directly related:

In certain circumstances the throttling code schedules more slow synchronization requests than expected, which might increase the CPU usage on the computer that the BlackBerry Synchronization Service is installed on. (DT 1008489)

If anyone has seen this, I'd appreciate it if you could share the experience or any possible workarounds that may exist.

Thanks!

Yes, happened to all of my servers post MR3. Support had me do the following:

"We will be using the Traittool and it need to be run from a BES Server, below is the default location

C:\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.3\bundle0033\tools

Here is the command, you will have to stop and start all the BES server after the command is run. Please replace SERVERNAME is the name of your server.

Traittool -server SERVERNAME -trait ExchangeSmartSyncEnable -set false"

I did this on one server over the weekend and the CPU is back to normal, so this is the fix.

Do you have a link to the MR4 release notes? I'm not seeing them on RIM's site.

We are on SP3 MR3 and experienced the issue, so not fixed by MR3.

It's an issue in 5.0.3 MR3 both Domino & Exchange. To be fixed in MR4 which is targeted to be release in August 2011. Meanwhile either do this:-

(1) Disable Sync service and have a good night sleep but wake up next day having users knocking on your door saying PIM sync items not sync

or

(2) Downgrade to BES 5.0.3 MR2.

Cheers!

As I understand it, SmartSync is a new secondary "reconciliation" type feature within the Sync service to keep items in sync. So disabling this feature using the command, but keeping the sync service running, should just bring you back to the normal sync functionality which has worked relatively well for us.

And yes disabling the Sync Service in Windows will not make your users happy.

According to support, MR4 should be released by Friday, August 5th and it will address this issue.

Thanks for all of the responses.

Hi all,

we have just patched our BES up to 5.0.3 MR3 (bundle 93) and are experiencing the same problems mentioned above.

Does anyone have any news on the MR4 Patch that is supposed to fix this ?

I have been on Blackberrys support site and have so far found nothing about this issue or a possible fix.

Thanks

Yeah, I'm still waiting for MR4 as well, Friday came and went with no sign of it anywhere. BlackBerrySyncService continues to eat all the CPU on my server, thankfully it doesn't appear to be affecting e-mail delivery.

any news on MR4 ? We just upgraded our Domino install from BES5.02 because of stuck threads. So we were some what annoyed when we upgraded to BES5.03SP3 and get 100% cpu for this service.

MR4 has been published for both Exchange and Domino. The Exchange version downloaded just fine for me but I've had some trouble getting the Domino version so far:
