Angry BES V.4 with Lotus Domino 6.5

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, I am trying to resolve the installation of BES v.4 with Lotus Domino 6.5. Domino resides on an I Series AS/400. We have installed W2K3 on a new Server for which BES is to be installed. During installation BES could not find notes.dll. This was resolved, but at no stage will it connect to the Domino mail server.

Does anyone have the same issue and how is it resolved ?

bes needs to be installed on a server with domino installed. (not your mail server) also, be sure the notes client is not installed on the server.

I'm not much of a Domino Expert, what are the implications of setting up another Domino server ? Is this going to effect how my current mail system works ?

You don't have any option. BES only runs on the Wintel platform. Besides, I rather run BES on a seperate server so that if something goes wrong it does effect my mail servers.

Its not too difficult to set up a separate Domino server to run on your Win2003 box. Just use the Domini admin client to create the server id and make sure to set up the security in the server, server document in the public address book. You can leave most things at the defaults.

It sure will, but keep in mind you can just use the Domino Messaging server instead of the full blown enterprise server.

Default Confused

I need to set up BES in our environment. How many server(s) do I need to make this happen.

I have..

1 Domino Server (our mail server).. >> running on an IBM Xseries using W2K3.

Going to buy..

1 Dell server for BES 4.0..

From here I am assuming I now also need to buy another Domino licence for the BES server?? Because I need to install Domino on the Dell server?
___

If you could please let me know what is the minimum requirements to get this running. (yes I have read the install guide)

Thanks.

BTW, I have very limited knowlege of Domino. So seting up another Domino server is not my cup of tea. I was hoping to just get buy with installing BES on the Dell and installing some type of connecting software that ties into the Dell and Domino(my mail server) to talk to each other.

BES runs as a Domino add in so it is not possibly to run without Domino on the server.

The cheapest way to do this would be just to install you BES on your mail server, however I would not recommend this at all as this would add load to your mail server and any time the BES had problems or needed to be upgraded it would mean your users mail server would be down.

The minimum requirements are in the install guide:
-Windows OS
-Domino Server (Enterprise or Messenging)
-MDAC 2.8

Ok, Thanks..

I will go ahead and buy another server. My plan is to install Domino Messaging server along with BES on the same server.

Do I need a licence for Domino Messaging server?

I believe you have to have enterprise server for BES - we had to....

You will need:
Windows Server software
Domino Server software
BES software
Dedicated hardware to run it all

We are in the process of deploying BES in our Domino environment as well.
I found the following document for hardware minimum requirement.

Default ... nobody mentioned about SQL server... but it is important =)

... nobody mentioned about SQL server... include it as a consideration too... bes setup includes a small-scale SQL server in MSDE, however it has limitation when your user base grows... for future expansion consideration, your bes configuration database is recommended to be put on a full SQL server - just highlighting

best way to ensure successful and hassle-free installation... consult and study the Quick Start Guide and Installation Guide found on the Product Documentation link in BlackBerry Support site

Default Sql??

Just how many users do I need before I need SQL. I am only going to run around 50 users.

Here is my setup on order at CDW.

1 HP ProLiant DL 320 G3
1 BES for Domino + 60 user licences
1 Windows 2003 Std Server licence 5 user.

I have..

1 IBM xSeries 345 running Windows 2003 Std.
1 Lotus Domino 6.5.1
140 user licences for Domino (email user licence only)

What I think I need..

1 Lotus Domino Messeging server licence???? (this will set the project back afew months. Not enough money in budget.)

1 SQL licence.

The BB rep told me this is all I need. He mentioned nothing about buying another Domino Licence or SQL.

What do you think.

I am currently running BES for 30 users with domino on an IBM x306 with a gig of RAM.

So far, MSDE(installed with BES if you aren't using a dedicated SQL server) is handling the load w/o any issues, although I am planning on moving the database over as soon as our new SQL server is built.

In regard to the domino licensing, we had to purchase the domino messaging server license to install on the BES server.
