Default Exchange 2007, do you need a BES?

Please Login to Remove!

I am the IT manager at a small company with a BES and Exchange 2007. Most days everything here works well that. A friend of mine called from her company and said that her boss had a new blackberry and wanted to sync it with Outlook/Exchange 2007 subfolders & wanted to wirelessly sync Cal, notes, tasks and Contacts. Her company does not have a BES can this be done directly with Echange 2007???? I figured that this is why I have a BES in place, to give me that kind of functionality.

For a BlackBerry device and Exchange 2007, the functionality you are describing requires a BES.

Thanks. Do you know what BB functionality she will be limited to? ie...What CAN she do? She was able to get the email delivered but with rules moving stuff into subfolders she couldn't view the messages on the BB after they were moved. Also, the BB keeps asking for Enterprise Activation or it reports that it failed. How do you make the BB stop asking that if you do not have a BES to Synch with?

Without BES, the device will only have basic wireless delivery of email. (Using BIS integrated with OWA.)
No folder support.

Calendar, tasks, contacts, and memos cannot be synced wirelessly without BES. You'd need to sync those manually with a USB cable.

Not sure what you mean by "keeps asking for Enterprise Activation".
The BB never does this... what exactly are you seeing on the device?

Sadly it's not in my hands but I think she is referring to the Enterprise Activation icon that appears when you originally get a device. Once it's connected to my BES, I know the icon disappears. In my practice, its where I enter the employee's email address and the activation password that I setup on the BES. It than rolls through the activation of each software package and eventually comes up with "Activation complete". I assume that since she does not have a BES and has no plans for one that she put in incorrect info into that screen and now it keeps trying to find a server/BES to correspond witht he info.
I tripped across this link for astrasync.com in another thread that I forwarded onto her. It might help with her other needs. Thanks for verifying my hunches. Much appreciated.

not sure if RIM is still offering it, but once upon a time, you could get a free BES with a single user license with your PIN. express edition, up to 10 or 15 users i think it allowed with purchase of additional cals.

why not just go download/install free BES..
