Default BES upgrade path - 4.1.2 (bundle 47) upgrade to 4.1.6 mr7

Please Login to Remove!

Hey folks,

I have just started at a company which has BES, however it seems that my previous did not update the BES server for a while.

It is currently on 4.1.2.20 and I see the latest is 4.1.6MR7

We have a number of issues which would be solved by upgrading including HTML email and office 2007 attachments.

I know this might be like asking "how long is a bit of string?" but is an in-place upgrade a quick thing which is reliable or is it a slow fraught with danger thing? and can I upgrade directly from my current version to the 4.1.6 service pack (and then install the Maintenance Release 7 update ontop of that)

The server it is running on is a Win2k sp4 box, which is running well, since we only have 14 BES users it's not heavily used.

The main reasons for wanting to do the upgrade are as above, html & office 2007 attachments.

any thoughts & advise would be well received.

Go for it. It is fairly painless.

Make sure you backup the database first!!!

Then install SP6 and then MR7 (they are culmative)

Should take less than an hour.

It has been out for a year and not many have had major issues with it.

Was a fun time last year when it was released.

knottyrope, if I upgrade 4.1.3.19 to 4.1.6.55...will all the handhelds do an EA and get new service books? I'm not clear based on the information here, Choosing a BlackBerry Enterprise Server upgrade option

I'm trying to have least-impact on users and Help Desk.

My plan is to do a knife-edge from one box to another first. Then, upgrade the BES version, then cut off my MSDE database to SQL.

I figure in that order, I can always roll back to the original BES if anything goes wrong along the way.

They'll get new service books, but they won't need a new EA.

That can work.

I would just convert MSDE to SQL first.
Backup SQL
Then just install BES 4.1.6 on the new box point to old database and let it upgrade.
Then add in MR7

Then if anything goes wrong restore SQL and boot up old box.

How much server impact is that for 400 users? (These are the kinds of questions white papers don't answer, so thank you!)

It won't have that much of an impact.
Do the upgrade late in the day, or after-hours, and I doubt your end users will even notice.

I started my update plans at 6:45pm last night, first off I did some windows updates, which promptly broke the server (oops) and as such I was faffing about till 8:30 getting it working again, then started the BES update to 4.1.7 which run without any issues, completing at 8:43 inc reboot.

by 9pm I'd finished testing to ensure things were all working.

so it only took me 15 minutes
