Default Internet via USB on 8700g?

Please Login to Remove!

I'm trying to install some apps on an 8700g I picked up off eBay for my wife. Some are easy to do because I can download the .alx package and install through the BB Desktop software. But others aren't and it's a bit of an arcane process to convert .jar files and such to .alx. In some cases, it's just easier if I could navigate my BB to the required URL and install right on the device. Problem is, I don't have a data plan as my wife will main use it for texting and I'll manually sync her Gmail calendar periodically.

So, my question was, is there a way to surf the web on the BB by hooking it up to my computer via USB for stuff like this?

Oh, bonus question that I think I know the answer to but will throw out there in case there's a more recent fix I don't know about and didn't find: the autobacklighting thing. Is there anyway to force the 8700g to display max brightness instead of auto adjusting according to ambient light conditions? Thanks!

You cannot use the BB (any model) for internet over USB. What you can do is use it the other way around - use the BB data connection to get internet on a laptop - provided you have a data plan.

No way to natively disable the ambient light sensor functions. There may be a third-party program to do it, but I don't have an 8700 or any experience with them.

Oh, yes you can.

I'm getting to this site with a 8700c via USB with radio off.

I have a BES server installed, activated the 8700 w/bes, and can get internet thru the Web Desktop.
