Default Would you still buy a Bold 9000 over Bold 9700 ?

Please Login to Remove!

Dear @all

I hope that this thread for making my decision easier is allowed in your forums. I am thinking of getting a Bold 9000 or a Bold 9700, but I really can't make the decission. Would you guys really buy a device like the 9000 or would you definately go for the 9700 ?

Some of my colleagues have the Bold 9000. I really like the 2.6" display and the very big and comfortable keyboard. I like the leather optics of the Bold 9000, but it's not very handy, isn't it ? And it has the trackball which is said to be fragile. I don't own the Curve 8900 so long yet, but I am satisfied with the trackball and wouldn't touch it with dirty hands.

The bold 9700 has the trackpad, a little higher resolution, but therefore smaller keys and the smaller keyboard with 2.44". I am just using this for normal duties, making some calls, writing some mails and SMS, getting some information out of the internet and I don't do so much surfing.

I don't watch movies and I don't listen to music, but I am using it for GPS-navigation.

Do you probably have any ideas for me ? What would you buy ? I am going nuts as I can't decide.

Thank you very much.

alright, here we go. This is my favourite subject cause i have a war brewing within me about this exact same thing.

so...

From what i hear, the battery life is much longer on the 9700 than the 9000. And the size of ur phone will make a difference in day to day use. The original bold is massive and it took me a very long time to get used to it. However it does have the greatest bb keyboard ever made. I think u will get used to typing on the new 9700 keyboard though. If i was able to learn how to type on my girlfriends iphone, i think it's possible to learn how to type on the 9700. The screen size is where i will not compromise. I have the original bold 9000, and i cannot go to a smaller screen. I find the 9000s screen tiny already and to go even smaller is unimaginable. When it comes to the trackpad, i think its a very nice thing as well. My bolds trackball has been cleaned a number of times which is not a good thing.

If i were u, id go to vodaphone or orange or t-mobile and id ask them if i could hold both phones side by side. Type the same thing on both phones and see how that feels. Surf the same web sites on both phones and see what u think. Which one can u read better. It's all about the compromise between personal comfort and userbility. Sure the 9700 can last forever and is small, but is it okay enough for u to type on and can u see the letters fine while reading the screen? All very tough questions.

For me, the 9000 wins. Still. The bigger screen and the fantastic keyboard cause for me, a blackberry is a keyboard and a screen, that's about it from a hardware stand point. What is a blackberry to you?

Ask your self...what will u NOT compromise on, and go from there.

Bold was too big for me. I decided to even forgo 3G and got a 8900. Now have a 9700 and wouldn't go back. Def all the benefits of a Bold squished into a smaller package, and with battery life between the 8900 and Bold.

I bought a 9700 to replace my 9000 thinking that I could adjust to the size diference, I couldnt, after a month I gave my 9700 to my Daughter and went back to my Bold 9000, if you have a 9700 and like it I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do my 9000 but my personal experience with the 9700 was not good.

Absolutely! I think the 9000 is better than the 9700.
When at&t came out with the 9700 I went out and bought it right away.. after a couple of weeks using it I turned back to my 9000.
The screen is bigger, it has the best keyboard than any blackberry and I think it looks a whole load better than the 9700... now if only the 9000 had a trackpad....

Love the trackpad and much, much better camera on the 9700.

I use EDGE and not 3G (unless I'm tethering), so battery life on the 9000 is not an issue at all. You can get a day of very, very heavy use out of it, or two days of moderate use.

For me, the most important thing is a keyboard that I can type quickly and accurately on. The 9000 does that best for me, so it is the device of choice for me.

Also, I've owned three BB trackball devices, and have never really had any problems. Keep the device in a case, and swipe your thumb on your pants or shirt to remove any dirt/oil before using the device. If you do those things, you should have little or no troubles with the trackball.

Thank you Guys, I think you really helped me making my decission. I know that this is silly, but I drew some lines of a sheet of paper consisting of the size of the Bold 9000 on one side and of the bold 9700 on the other side. The difference isn't that much at all, but you get a bigger display and the better keyboard.

I will go for that one, thanks

I love the screen size of the 9000, but the 256M RAM on the 9700 gives it the edge to win. The 9700 should have been the same size as the 9000.

I'm stuck as well. Contemplating upgrading to a 9700 but I like the decent size of the device and phone of the 9000 which I currently own.

However I currently run on about 5-7mbs of free ram and have to reboot 4+ times per day.

This isn't fair!

Why can't they just release an update 9000 motherboard with 256 of Ram and change nothing?! Is that soo much to ask!!!

Has anyone heard anything about that above device? It seems like an obvious win on a lot of fronts.

The 9000 is my first BB, and I am hooked. I think the size of the screen and keyboard is perfect. I can not use anything smaller. Of course there are a lot of things about the 9700 I'd like on the 9000, but I simply can't go smaller.

Hopefully the powers that be put out a new generation 9000 phone with all the advances of the 9700.

I went through this buying decision just before Christmas. Money was no object and I still went with the 9000. No regrets. Even got my wife one for under the tree.

This topic is a pretty hot one and comes up a lot on all well known BB forums so I won't rehash my reasons why. I feel the 9000 is the best BB ever released.

Default As big as the 9000 is, it's small enough...

...to fit in that little "coin pocket" on jeans. That's where I put my phone, and the 9000 is a snug fit, but not terrible; I compared the 480 x 360 smaller 9700 screen to the 480 x 320 larger 9000 screen, and while those smaller pixels on the 9700 add up to a breathtaking screen, for many reasons already mentioned I like the 9000's bigger screen and keyboard.

Also, I paid $200 less for the bold 9000 than for the 9700 (got it second hand BNIB... check kijiji in your area)

The 9700 screen is often touted as being better than the 9000. The 9000 screen is no slouch.

Also, the 9000 does not have the hotspots that I've seen on the 9700 screen. When you reboot and the orange ATT screen comes up, the color is smooth and 100% constant across the entire screen on the 9000. On the 9700 you can see four or five faint wide strips the start at the top and run down the screen--it's not a smooth in it lumination.

The 9000 keyboard is much easier to type on, the screen is "whiter" and "brighter" when you put them side by side and it feels better built IMO. The 9700 amazes with the better speed due to more RAM and the trackpad is sooooo much better than the trackball. And, the camera with autofocus is much better and takes better pictures. I don't think it is the 3.2 MP vs 2.0 MP, since the lens is not good in any phone, but the ability to focus helps with the pictures. But who buys a BlackBerry for the camera? I have said this before, give me a 9000 with the trackpad, 512 MB of RAM and a slimmer battery cover and that is the perfect BlackBerry. I sold my 9000 but just ordered another one to go back for now until such a device comes out.

Good question!

At present the 9000 is $100.00 cheaper than the 9700 here in the Vancouver sre according to Roger's website. The 9000 is $99.99. I got mine earlier this month as a HUP for 99 cents. How could I go wrong?

Default 97009 over Bold

I first went from a Bold 9000 to a 3G S, I went back to the Bold after about 3 weeks, I then bought a 9700 and found the keyboard and general size way too cramped for my taste so back to the 9000, the 3G S and 9700 went to my family and I retained the 9000, there is nothing else out there that I would consider at this time, maybe the 9900 Magnum if it ever becomes reality but I'm not that big a fan of a touch screen or a form factor the size of the 9700.

I tried the 9700 for a few weeks and returned it for the 9000. The main reason was the smaller size and keyboard. I couldn't manage typing on it no matter how long I tried. Since it appears to be 3/8" wider I appreciate the larger screen. I also like being able to remove the SD card through the side instead of having to take out the battery.
