For the AT&T costumers, do you think the next wave of BB's will support 3G or have this been confirm that they will?

Probably not. There are plenty of open threads about this.

A WiFi device is rumored to be on its way later this year, perhaps to T-Mo, but that is still just a rumor. As far as 3G, probably 2008 sometime. Your guess is as good as anyone else right now. It wouldn't be worth the cost until GSM 3G is built out more than it is now.

The Verizon 8830 is EVDO capable and that is 3G speed.

I played with an 8830 at a Verizon kiosk this weekend. The data speed is flippin' brilliant! It seemed 5x faster than the GPRS on my 7100. The track ball was great.

The family plan with 2 lines + 2 SMS + 1 BB Unlimited Data was $50/month more than T-Mobile, however. Sales guy said it was negotiable.

The next generation probably will but the next few models probably won't be 9xxx devices...

is there any current 3G phone / pda that has decent battery life? I've heard the treo 750 is pretty bad for battery life.

Besides using the 3G BB as a modem, is there any noticable differences in speed? I have a 8707v on GPRS and a 8300 running Edge both on AT&T and didn't notice significant difference when surfing. Any one has done some comparison?

EDGE is good enough for me. I heard that 3G smartphones are battery killers, ie, BlackJack.

Carriers can limit the amount of bandwidth you get in any standard and specific implementations can vary. But here's a rough idea on download speeds:

EDGE = 237 kbit/s to theoretical maximum is 474 kbps (possibly 768)

UMTS = 384 kbit/s to 3.6 Mbit/s. Assume at least 1.5 Mbps
EV-DO = Up to 2.5 Mbps possibly 3.0 Mbps

GPRS = ~ 60 Kbps

Over EDGE you can expect a 1.5x - 10x increase in download speed.
Over GPRS you can expect a whole new universe.

theoretical being very important there. on my EDGE ive never had over 140 kb
and its slow as you know what.
Other than tethering I dont see a big need for it until BB gets a better browser. I hate everything being mixed up or not show on pages or you have to do desktop view and scroll all over the place.

Average EDGE speed is 50-125 kbps with the majority at 50-90. Max is 236kbps or 300 kpbs on a modified tower.

EVDO ave rag is 400-800 kbps with a max of 1.2 mbps or 3.1 mbps on Rev A.

3G will be similar to EVDO,with a theoretical limit of 14.1 mbps.

However, your speed is dependent upon many factors: your connection, the processor, available memory, distance to the tower and tower congestion are some. And voice always has priority. I doubt if you will tell much difference with a handheld, other than tethering.

it's hard to choose. what good it high bandwidth if your battery doesn't last. just think about google maps on 3g running the gps. that already kills the battery twice as fast on edge. on 3g you might not make it to your destination before the battery dies. i personaly don't like to use my phone to charge my batteries so the car charger is out of the question.
