What legitimate reason would you have for setting a usage counter back to zero?

there is no way to reset it, but you can see if the phone is used by going to options -> status and typing BUYR.

The only reason for resetting the counter is to try and pass off something that is 'used' as brand new with 'proof'. Hopefully, the OP is not an eBay seller ...

just be careful that counter is very inaccurate, my life timer, if that what it is under options/status is lower then phone usage timer in the phone / status screen...
