Default Torch Vs. Bold 9700 Series With OS6?

Please Login to Remove!

Any of you Torch users come from the 9700 series with OS6? I'm considering the 9800, but for now I very much like the 9700 with OS6. Anyone here have both devices to compare?

I had a 9700, sold it, bought the Torch.

I loved the Torch the first few days, it was like my new toy. The screen is large and nice to look at .....but after a few days, I noticed that the most thing I do on a BB is type......and this virtual keyboard is very annoying and not precise. Furthermore, the physical keyboard is flat out due to the slide form factor, which makes the buttons very small and flat and I tend to miss alot of buttons while typing........

I returned it back for a full refund and bought a new 9700 and loaded OS 6 right away....never been happier before

I have both and stopped using the 9700 mostly.

I like that the torch can do all and more. The 9700 screen is looking tiny after using torch for a few months.

It's the same operating system, it's just which phone you'd prefer.

I'm also going to point out the larger screen as the main difference. I put OS6 on my boyfriend's 9700. He loves it and it functions almost identically, however his icons are minuscule in comparison to mine, and it looks a little cramped on the home screen. He finds navigating easy, while I am used the torch and being able to pinch/move/swipe with my fingers across the screen. Using the trackpad to navigate is frustrating for me, but if you've never had a Torch, you'd never notice.

Like knottyrope, I prefer the screen on the Torch waaaaaay better than 9700, both in size and the ability to pinch in and out, and slide (swipe) it.

I prefer the keyboard on the 9700, I find the Torch keyboard more "cramped". Also, Torch is significantly heavier than 9700, 6oz vs 4oz.

9700 with OS6 can do everything that Torch does. Hopefully, the bugs will be worked out in the subsequent versions and OS6 will become more "memory-friendly".

I had OS6 on the 9700 in the days leading up to getting my torch. Loved the OS, but much happier with it on my torch.

It would be more accurate that the 9700 can do almost as much as the Torch. OS 6 is more clearly suited for touchscreen devices. If the bar form factor meets your needs, the the 9780 would probably run better on OS 6 without the battery drain.

huh?

9780 and Torch have more memory and better camera, but they all have the same CPU.

Bought a new Torch yesterday to replace my 9700 running OS6. Brought the Torch back today for a refund, reactivated my 9700 on OS6. Probably in another 6-9 months after several firmware updates the Torch may become usable, but for now IMO it's too unpolished in terms of firmware...way too twitchy and clunky. Between the OS6-9700 and my iPhone I'm happy as is, each has its own strengths.

If the Torch is not your cup of tea, then great for you. To really give a new device a fair trial, you need to give it more than a few days. IMO, the key are not as prominent as on the 9700 but the dimensions of the keys are almost the same. Having owned a 9700, it took very little getting used to. Effort equals reward. You get out of something only what you are willing to put into it. If I were concerned about keeping a device, the keyboard would be very low on the list. Larger issues like the OS, the browser or processor would be of more concern in my decision. To each his own, I have owned the Torch since launch day and in my first few days, I was more impressed with the improvements over my 9700 both hardware and software. I spent more time going through all the menus and seeing the more organized and intuitive menus. With every new device, especially one with a newer OS, notice that I did not say radically different, that there are going to be issues. I got the Torch because I wanted a touchscreen and a physical keyboard. The virtual one is not what I was expecting but I find the landscape virtual keyboard to be adequate for when I actually use it. Again, I am practicing on it and getting better every day but I am glad to have the physical one.

Over time you adapt to what you have if you like touchscreen go with the 9800 if you like solid phone with a track pad then go with the 9700. it is all what you desire in the phone. the OS on the device is the same ( if you do the leaked version of OS6 to the 9700) there for just some small functions you cannot do on the bold that you can do on the torch. Hence the fact of the touch screen, and the functionality of the touch screen.

I have the Torch/9700 and iPhone4 (yes spoilt lol) that said I love the Torch and haven't touched the others since, I will sell my 9700 to my colleague - I agree that the larger screen really did it for me, plus I find I am even writing more with the touchscreen than I ever immagined, prefer it to the iPhone's too. There are still a few bugs which need to be dealt with but no doubt with future updates they will be seen to. I really think os6 was made for the Torch and on non touch screens would lose out some how, just my personal opinion...

A few posts ago I mentioned I dumped my day old Torch and went back to my 9700 on OS6... funny what a difference a few days make! While waiting for the Torch to sell on eBay I loaded it up and played with it some more and ya know, it's not bad at all!

Bottom line the 9700's now on eBay and the Torch is my iphone's running mate.

The Torch firmware definitely needs some wringing out and bug fixes but it's pretty good all in all for a new OS. My biggest gripe was the virtual keyboards but after playing with them for awhile I got used to the quirks, and every now and then I use the hardware kybd anyway.

You can commit me now.

I have both devices. I was pleasantly surprised with how OS6 seems to make that trackpad move turbo speed with the 9700. And I love how the new interface feels on it.

But even though the larger screen is a compromise with respect to shorter battery life, I'm keeping my Torch. The larger number pad, the ease with which I can move with all input options, the convenience of the touchscreen when going through emails is just fantastic. Not to mention, that larger screen makes a much more pleasant internet browsing experience.

The clear winner for me is the Torch - no doubt about it.

To each his own, I hate touch screen keyboards.

I however do like pressing the icons on the menu via the touch screen, that's about the only thing you can really do with a touch screen.

Try browsing on these forums using the tourch screen and tell me how many times you enter the wrong thread! You can never get to the right thread! it is not usable! nice toy that doesn't really work the way it was intended to.

Have you tried using the trackpad (for accurate selection) in conjuction with the touchscreen? It is a wonderful marriage.

ML, you don't need to be a flaming 9700 fanboy calling the Torch a toy. You only had the Torch for a week during which you had posts ans polls on another site as well as this one absolutely extolling the virtues of the Torch. Because you did not want to spend more than a week on the keyboard, you changed to the 9700 and then 9780. If the 9780 form factor works for you, great but your input has to be taken with a grain of salt. I have had the Torch since launch and never had any issues adapting to its keyboard. If I were going to switch devices, I would do so for more substantive reasons than the keyboard. If you had spent more time testing the Torch in the store, you might have saved us the anguish of reading your posts on this forum site and other sites.
