Question Anyone notice battery drain with BBM 5.0?

Please Login to Remove!

I'm running OS 4.6.1.250 on my 8900, and for the most part it has been good. Battery drain is a bit faster than I would like, and I expect that to improve in later releases. But what I've experienced in the last day is far worse than I would have expected...

I installed the new BB Messenger (version for 4.6.1 OS) yesterday, and it seems to be excellent. Works really well, feature set is great.

Today, however, I had to go out shopping at a couple of stores -- this turned into a total of four hours of shopping. While I was out, I used Maratick as my shopping list manager. I had NO OTHER apps running that don't normally run all the time on the 8900. So - the ONLY things different about my 8900 today were that I was using Maratick for 4 hours straight (I kept it open, and consulted it whenever I pulled my 8900 out of its holster, checking my list, marking items complete, etc).

No other apps were running except the standard ones you can't turn off, e.g., phone, browser, etc.

My battery was at about 75% when I went out to start shopping. By the end of 4 hours, it was down to 25%. Under "normal" use, my 8900 is typically still at 65% when I go to bed and plug it into the charger cable.

So -- is the battery usage a byproduct of leaving Maratick open all that time??? I kinda doubt it, but I imagine it's possible...

Is the battery drain a byproduct of having the new BB Messenger installed? No way of knowing...unless others chime in here with similar experiences.

I haven't noticed any battery drain issues thus far, but I haven't been testing. I will leave it off of the charger for a while to see.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry Curve 8900)

Mine has been off the charger for a while now and I haven't experienced any abnormal drain on the battery.

Thanks for the feedback. I've had my 8900 off charger all day, and the battery seems to be fine as well. I don't think it's the new BB Messenger.

What's of concern, though, is that it seems that using Maratick as a real-time shopping aid - at least the way I did - drained my battery. Might not be Maratick -- might be the way the OS handles an app that's left running as I switch back and forth from home screen to check incoming emails, and back to the running app (in this case, Maratick).

I had gotten into the habit of pulling the 8900 out of the leather holster, looking at the open list in Maratick, marking off items as I put them in the shopping cart and popping the 8900 back into the holster to get it to "sleep". Somehow, using it this way for 4 hours drained the battery. Might be OS, might be Maratick... I really don't know...

I've been watching my usage and battery since my original post. My problem doesn't seem to be BBM -- that was just a coincidence it seems. The real problem seems to occur when I leave Maratick running in the background while switching to other apps.

I don't know if the issue is with Maratick in particular (hard to imagine that's the issue - such a simple app!), or with leaving an app running in the background while switching around a lot. But every time I go to the store, use Maratick for a shopping list and continue to consult the list while in the store, my battery consistently drains SO fast (using OS 4.6.1.250).

Frustrated, but I don't think the problem has anything to do with BBM.

Go back to .231 , I think it is the better os for 8900.
I'm using it and not having problem in battery drain.

If you have an issue please start a thread, your post has nothing to do with BBM 5.
