The time has come to switch from my old 7230 to 8700 My question is, how do I transfer all the data I have on my old one to the new one?

use DM 4.2 its pretty easy, and not everything will transfer over FYI

So as I understand, and please forgive me but I'm just a user, for each type of BB we're using different Desktop Software, right?

There are several versions of Desktop Manager available, however v4.2 is the newest and will work with any BB, you just won't be able to use the Media Manager function. The great benefit of 4.2 is the Switch Device Wizard which makes swapping out BB's very easy. Good luck.
