I have seen this sentiment parroted quite a bit in this forum. I would question whether its contagious or from actual personal experience with Motorola products. My experience with Motorola products has been fine. I do believe I have stated this before. I currently have Motorola products that run great, one in particular has served me over 15 years. My last slider phone was Motorola and I had nothing but a wonderful experience with it.
I love this forum and my experience with the Storm is not one I look upon with antipathy. I don't believe I have given any "disparaging reviews" of the Storm 9530. I seek only to bring reproach upon RIM for releasing it far too soon, treating the loyal 9530 crowd like lab rats, and then releasing a next-Gen model while turning its back on the platform crowd that inspired the 9550 design. Bottom line, anyone with a Storm 9530 should have gotten at least a discount or contract exception of some sort for the 9550.
Despite RIM releasing the 9530 with a train wreck of an O/S, the 9530 developed into a fine business tool / toy that has served me well. The only negative thing I will say is that there is NO EXCUSE for forcing consumers to scour for beta's OS versions to milk acceptable performance out of a phone. In essence, RIM banked too heavily on the notion that its loyal customers would tolerate this foolishness just to have the touchscreen technology integrated into the Blackberry experience. In my estimation, that is exactly what occurred. Luckily for RIM, people like us felt challenged, engaged the process, shared our experiences, and found a modicum of excitement within the Blackberry Storm underground. It was my pleasure, but this sentiment was not shared by some.
My opinion is that Blackberry is making a mistake in not further diversifying itself as Google clearly has. Blackberry has only two big trademarks that distinguish it to me: Push Email and BBM. The other aspects of the Blackberry experience are the standard cellular fare. IMO, BBM is a bit over-celebrated and not much different than SMS / instant messaging. A majority of the Blackberry users in my business environment have never fired it up.
Google has picked up where Blackberry lost its steam and has integrated many services into its platform; they are also FREE. Email, calendar, document hosting, instant messenging, a virtual voicemailbox for more than one phone number, satellite navigation, etc. I use some of these services on my Storm. It's evident Google is putting more time into developing its cellular services and for good reason. I don't see this same enthusiasm emanating from the RIM camp, just its following. But RIM has to throw its fans a bone more often if it expects to keep customers like me. I invest heavily into my mobile communications répertoire and I lean towards innovation when warranted. Evidently RIM is content holding its comfortable corner of the marketshare, but I surmise that grasp is quickly becoming tenuous.
Admittedly, I am not a Droid X owner yet. I surely will report my experiences to this forum and give my objective assessment. I am the first to admit when my decisions don't occasion the "rainbow and butterflies" effect so don't lose faith in me. I am thinking a Youtube video will be in order. Additionally, should RIM take the Storm back to the drawing board and crank out a newer more advanced device I see nothing preventing me from coming back to the fold. My wallet follows innovation...
