Thumbs up 8700c - Got mine yesterday. Ringtones where? heh

Please Login to Remove!

I've been pestering our Cingular rep for this device since 11/1. On Friday, he told me I wouldn't be getting it till sometime next week. You can imagine my surprise when 3 showed up on my desk yesterday morning

The thing "FEELS" great. While it's larger than the 7100, it's lighter than the 7290 or the 7100.

I'm having a small problem re-training myself away from SureType. I'm sure it will resolve itself in a day or two, but I keep finding myself hitting the wrong key.

The phone quaility feels much better .. but that could just be new device happiness and nothing real. I use a jabra250 and the quality is perfect. A few friends of mine used to bust my chops that the audio quality of the 7100+jabra was only so-so. I called them all with the 8700+jabra and they all thought I sounded perfect.

How do you do ringtones on this thing? I heard you could use MP3s, but I haven't experimented at all. Usually I just come here and read some posts and don't need to do any experimentation myself When are y'all re-opening the labratories and posting results?!

One thing I *really* like is the new interface for addressing new messages. That's a feature that needs to quickly make its way into all versions of all devices. It's a major usability improvement. Nothing was wrong before, per se, but you have to try this new way to see what I mean.

I'm sure there's other stuff I'm forgetting, but I wanted to quickly post.

Default Make your own - mp3trim

You can use this free simple program to cut out part of your mp3s.

http://www.mptrim.com/

I suspect if you email them to yourself you should be able to save them to the device. I hear there is a 300k size limit but can't confirm.

I made a "proof of concept" mp3 .. a 10kb clip of crap, really, but I wanted it small and easy.

I put this mp3 on the web, and browsed to the page. That all works. However, if I try and access the MP3, I get an "OK" button without other text. I am not able to "download"/play the mp3.

I've tried emailing it to myself, but I don't get any attachment handling options.

Was there a section in the manual about this? Course, me being so damned smart, I didn't bother to read or even take the manual with me. Now my smart ass is sitting at home unable to get mp3s working ;)

Default Attachments

Someone else is going to have to jump in here. I am on a corporate BES with attachments. Don't know how it's done otherwise. Sorry.

Ringtones can only be saved via the webbrowser, also there is a 120k file limit, and the MP3s have to be 32000khz or more to work. I wish it supported MP3 attachments...

usually they are 44100khz (high quality). That works, problem is when they are lower than 32000khz (lower quality)

It works!

I must have messed up somewhere before. I tried it again. I used MP3 Workshop to cut some mp3's I had. I used a sample rate of 32000Hz, and 64Kbps bitrate. I kept with stereo, as chaning to mono seemed to bomb for me. Anyways, I simply put the cut .mp3 up on my webserver and blammo.

Thanks all!

Rogers units are always locked and require $250 CDN payable to Robers..err..Rogers to have it unlocked. If you really want one that badly you could technically do it, but $599 without contract + $250 for unlocking is just wayyyyyyy too much for my liking.

I got my 8700 yesterday as well. So far, I think RIM did a great job! Couldn't get your link to the ringtones to open?!

There is no limit with the "internet browser". Upload using coolservice and you will not have the 120kb file limit. i used sound forge and was able to upload a 390kb file encoded at 96 kbps at 44,100hz in mono. it worked great its about a 36 second file.

Default cant seem to get files larger than 600kb

was trying to get silly, and larger files seem give the error, file too large when trying to download it via the web browser.
