When you step off your G5 personal jet and simply MUST scream at your staff back in the Hamptons, nothing announces your pretentiousness better than a Meridiist or a Vertu.

Wow. The only feature the site mentions is a lame 2 megapixel camera (with no autofocus). No mention of OS, media functions, screen res, etc.

I think this sort of product could hurt them more than help them. For instance, does this imply their watches are as overpriced/underperforming?

Wirelessly posted

Its a phone. Its like this, if you have the $6,100.00 to drop on a phone. You don't need a BB, your assistant does. It does sport a polished stainless steel case soild crystal 265k + display, and an aligator skin battery cover.

This will not hurt Tag Heuer in the least, and I expect they will sell plenty of them. This is marketed at the ultra-rich who have no problem dropping this kind of cash on luxury. I'm also confident that Tag Heuer doesn't need to sell any to stay afloat, so any revenue from this product will only be a bonus.

It will probably sell better at $6100 than it would if they priced it at only $610. "More money than brains" would be an appropriate ad slogan.

Folks shell out for Vertu phones too, and they're WAY under-specced. It's the cachet factor that some folks want, and the price tag is a major part of that.

Do you think USB 1.0 is a typo? Do they also give you a Tag Heuer hourglass so you can estimate how long it will take to sync it?

The people that buy this aren't going to care about USB 1 or 2, or sync times, or display resolution, or anything else remotely technological. They have "people" to take care of that stuff.

sorry but that phone is fugly. You're buying nothing but a brand. That phone doesn't say luxury to me at all. I don't see why anyone would want that above a Blackberry.

...which is why this phone isn't marketed to you.

Yup, it's purely a status symbol. And the outrageous price is part of that status. Remember that crazy iPhone app called "I Am Rich that did nothing but display a red jewel on the screen? It cost $1000! And some fools actually bought it!! There's not a big market for these stupidly expensive devices (and apps), but there still are a few people who will pay. Maybe it's enough to just get a handful of these Tag Hauer phones out there to advertise the brand. Making a profit may not be the goal here.

This is one of those brand extensions that does not really make sense. A similar example is the BMW bicycle that I think is no longer sold. Expensive and nice looking, but bicycle manufacturers do a way better job.

I'm sure they're thinking watches are cells phones are both accessories. But even something as basic as where you buy the two is completely different. They'll probably have jewlers sell these.
