I said that early in this thread. And BG rants about it. There's a reason for everything, and Vzn probably will never reveal their reason for (in essence) removing a very popular feature from what amounts to their version of the 8900. I mean they know their customers want it but so far they will not provide it. It's almost weird. It was easy to figure out why they locked out free GPS for so long--money. But this decision..

Better than what? The camera/display/memory/keyboard specs are the same as the 8900, and that's what this phone basically is (minus WiFi). I don't know about the processor speed of the 8900 vs the Bold though. Is it faster than the 8900?

The way to get Blackberry/Verizon to put the much needed wi-fi into this new phone is for no one and I mean no one to buy it unless they give us wi-fi! Maybe they will get the message by then.

Processor speed is at the top of my list, camera is optional, though at least equal or better memory would be great. Better keypad and display are user subjective and I would not speak as to what I think would be better for you.

Well, hopefully we'll both be happy when it is revealed what processor it has. I would bet it will be at or very close to the bold, if not faster. As for memory, compared to the 8330 and 8830, well, there won't be any comparison.

The Bold is a bit more snappy. But don't get me wrong the 9630 is a great device. If you never had a Bold you will like this phone very much, but if you had/have a Bold you won't trade your Bold for this daily.

That's probably the only way to get them to listen.

Consider this: they have a real winner on their hands, even without WiFi.

So why introduce WiFi if they don't have to? The device is going to sell anyway, and in HUGE numbers.

The support costs for Verizon to deal with WiFi Blackberries would be outrageous. Can you imagine the less savvy people going to the stores and calling support, having problems with WiFi?

Verizon's going to put that headache off as long as they can!

(PS - since every BB requires a data plan on Verizon, the "profit motive" argument is moot, so PLEASE don't bother posting that drivel!)

Yet...Verizon sells the Samsung Saga (Win Mobile) which has WiFi...so the support argument doesn't necessarily wash either.

It certainly does. How many Sagas do they sell? How many 9630's will they sell? Which user is more demanding? 'nuff said.

If Skype only works on WiFi enabled Blackberries, that could be the tipping point.

If that's the case, I'll probably leave Verizon.

In fact, I'm waiting to see what the specs are for Skype BB before I renew my contract.

Ah, but AT&T... That network just sucks eggs... No good options. Bleh!

They sell enough Sagas that they can't keep them in stock! And define demanding...or do you mean which user is more sophisticated or knowledgeable?

I don't think quantity and support are issues. It more likely has to do with old school phone company attitudes about tight control over users and resulting revenue. For example, I spent two weeks in Bermuda last November with my wife and our two 8330s. The resort had free WiFi and had I been able to use the curves on WiFi, Verizon would have lost about $600 in data roaming charges. Now that's a real reason for them not to put WiFi in a device!

PS: Verizon lost the $600 anyway, as I had asked them prior to the trip if data roaming was included in my plan. They said "no additional roaming charges as long as I stayed on the CDMA partner network". WRONG! But they had made notes of the conversation in my account and refunded the charges without argument.

Why do you people automatically blame Verizon for the lack of wi-fi? They won't be the only carrier with this phone, even if they are the first to carry it. The Storm was released worldwide, and I don't recall hearing about any of them having wi-fi. These phone already carry 7 different frequency bands (2 CDMA and 5 gsm) and Bluetooth. There's probably not even any room in the damn thing for a wi-fi module. It'd also add to the overall handset cost.

We blame Verizon because they said no to WiFi. They are a big carrier for RIM and you don't think they won't listen to what they say? Thought so. And the chip that the 9630 and Storm are running both have the capabilities to put WiFi in it. Verizon didn't want it on either.

I'm not sure why they refunded you. International roaming is never free unless you have a specific line item on your plan for you which you pay an extra monthly fee use data internationally with no per kb charges.

They refunded the charges because two different CSRs in the International department said "no additional data roaming charges if you stay on the CDMA network while in Bermuda or any Caribbean country ". Both also recorded the information in the call notes for my account. I applaud them for eating the charges after quoting incorrect information.

BTW...the reason I called was because (at that time) the VZW web site was unclear about the data roaming charges. It implied that Bermuda was considered North America for data usage, but not voice. I suspected that wasn't correct...so I called...twice. Apparently (again, at that time) the CSRs were under the same impression. I even have an email from a gentleman named Harlan confirming that information.

I should also note...the web site has been changed to clear up any confusion about those charges.
