Default New to BB - Newbie questions

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

I am new to BB and this day one for me. Just upgraded Nokia 6610 to BB 8320 with TMobile. I did not purchase any additional services for my BB with Tmobile yet. I have few questions and need your advices:

1. How do I transfer my wallpaper/ringtone from Nokia to BB? I am able to download the wallpaper from Nokia to my PC but cannot download the ringtones to my PC. It says copyright protected. I do have some free ringtones in my PC, but I have not figure out how to upload them to the BB yet. Any hint?

2. I am able to connect my BB to my Wifi router. In the top right corner, there is icon WiFi-UMA. However I am not able go to the internet. I open the browser, goto www dot yahoo dot com, and then BB says I am allowed to access to that website!!! Do I need to purchase any special service from TMobile to get to internet? I assume not because my BB is already connected to my rounter/Internet... I could be wrong. Please advice.

3. From Option/Status/About it says "v4.2.2.180 platform 2.5.0.35" What does it mean? Is it the OS version? What the benefit to upgrade the newer OS version, which I saw in this forum?

Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the forums.

If you did not purchase a Data plan then your BB is simply a phone with very limited function.
I suggest you call T-Mobile and discuss the various plans for the BB.

Also you should download the Desktop Manager ( free ) and it will offer some of the function you need via the PC.
Another thing , read the manual

Good Luck

1. Download Desktop Manager (http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/); it will allow you to add media to your device from your computer.

2. Your device isn't connecting to the internet because you don't have a BlackBerry plan. You will need one in order to fully utilize your BlackBerry. You can add one to your plan with T-Mobile for $19.99/month.

3. Yes, what you are seeing is the version of the BlackBerry operating system installed on your phone. Upgrading would give you additional features such as a video camera and HTML email. Upgrading has both advantages and disadvantages so do your research before hand.

Welcome to the forums. Please use the search option to look at previous posts and find answers to your questions (try to only ask what hasn't already been answered). Use BlackBerry FAQ for great tips on how to get started. Good luck, and welcome to the club!

With the wifi you won't be able to use the native BB browser...you may have a wifi browser but I doubt it. You can download Opera and get that to work over the wifi without the data plan but you won't be able to download anything cause it will try and open the default BB browser....my suggestion really just like the others have said is to get the data plan.

Default Thanks for the answers

Thanks so much for the timming answers... You are truly BB owners...

I have downloanded/Installed the BB device and Media Manager. With that I was able to upload ringtones to my BB. Now I set "Sex and the City" as the phone tune... LOL.. I like this theme, but not sure what the business people think about the phone owner if they listen to this melody... Working environment is senstive and better not have anyting with Sex... right? LOL

Data plan to get internet access.. Ah.. Spend more money could be tough at this point... I have to get the approval from mywife... first..

Upgrade the OS... there is a risk, but it's worth isn't it? Question: Is there a way to restore the original OS in case the OS upgrading going bad?

Thanks again.

PS: I am still reading, viewing FAQ.. ect. but I highly appreciate if you could give me some advices/answers.

9s Nite! Everybody!

Upgrading the OS is easy..BB has the easiest upgrade process that I've seen on any phone that I have had...and I have had a TON.

Here is a link to a thread containing the latest operating system for the 8320: http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ilanguage.html Read through the posts to get an idea about the pros and cons. Yes, you can always downgrade to a previous OS.

I upgraded my OS today now i can play you tube, get the newer themes and much more. If you accidentally brick your phone in the process you can restore your original OS if you back it up first.
