you can remove a license from one database and use it in another. You could also consolidate your databases and share licenses

Actually its quite easy. You go to your bes server b and point the database to where the database is for bes server a. Just make sure you note down the license keys on bes server B so you can re-add them to bes server A.

I am not near my bes server, other wise I would give you exact direction.....

But it is as simple as telling the BES server which database to use through the Bes Configuration Icon.

It doesnt matter. You can have 2 BES with the same lisence keys no issue... just make sure you done go over your user count.

Follow Share the BlackBerry Configuration Database between two existing BlackBerry Enterprise Servers, How to merge BlackBerry Configuration Databases, and Prerequisites for DBMerge articles.

The key is creating a 3rd new database so you don't damage your currently existing ones. Also, make sure you take backups too.

No, not at all ... the users will have to reactivate as this will remove them from BES b.

Licenses don't have a 1 to 1 relationship with a BES but rather with a database

databases have a 1 to 1 or 1 to many relationship with BES's ... hence you can have 1 license file that 2 (or more) BES's share.

Default License Migration between servers

Can two servers use the same license but point to different databases? For example, I have a 20 CAL license and have 10 users on server A and 10 users on Server B. I'm in the process of moving all the users from Server A to Server B and want to make sure I can use the same 20 CAL license on both servers at the same time until the user move is complete. Any idea's?

nope, can't do it. You could try merging the configuration databases and then you can share licenses ...

Default License Migration between servers

Thanks for the quick response, any particular reason why you can't do it? I want to shut the one server down after I move the users, can you do this with a db merge?

If you can't do it this way, could I just keep adding users even if I'm over my 20 CAL's. Then once I've moved all the users I could shut down the other server and add the additional CAL's? We are running release 4.1 on Server A which will stay running and we have 4.0 in our UK office that will be shut down once the users are moved off.

Thanks, Matt

You can't add users past 20 and stay in line with the license agreement ... that said I've seen environments with -1500 free CALs functioning properly; take it for what you will.

Licenses have a one to one relationship with databases; so one license belongs in only one database; just the model that is setup.

If you merge the two databases you can change the servers config to use this newly created db, share the license, and if everything is 4.x (handhelds at 4.0.2 or > ) you can drag and drop the users from one BES to another and they won't have to re-cradle or anything. ... they'll get updated service books / encryption keys wirelessly.

unfortunately you need 4.1 SP2 or > to do the merge, so you'd be out of luck with this I guess.
