ok so i have a bold that was previously on an at&t monthly plan. I decided to go to their To Go service thinking all i had to do was insert my sim in the bold and i would be able to make phone calls use text messages at the very least. well it didnt work, i think i got sos or insert sim or something. Not only that but the sim would not work in the To Go phone that it came with either. So i think it fried the sim. The lady in the store says i have to have a blackberry sim which does not make sense to me.

So my question is do i have to unlock the phone to use at&t To Go service or once the phone is unlocked what are the best carriers for this phone. I really want to use at&t because their service is the best in my house for some odd reason.

Unlocking the phone will have no effect on whether you can use AT&T PAYG or not. The SIM cards are not any different.

It sounds to me like your PAYG SIM was never activated properly.

The best carrier is the one that has service when and where you need it. Since you are in the US and the 9000 is GSM, your choices are AT&T or T-Mobile.

I agree with dc/dc. Sounds to me like the To Go SIM wasn't properly activated.

Note that once you use an AT&T BlackBerry, they will automatically add a data plan to your account.

Once a phone is unlocked, it is unlocked for all carriers.

nope. AT&T is AT&T regardless of service type.

There are two issues. Read the thread again. Sounds like you were unable to make voice calls, and it was suggested to talk to AT&T and make sure the SIM and your account were properly configured. That's one issue.

The other is FYI that AT&T has been automatically adding blackberry data plans to accounts when a BlackBerry connects to the network. It has nothing to do with issue #1; just an FYI so you know, because it is an extra cost that will be forced on you.

With the ATT Go Phone service, you can only use text and make phone calls. As for the Blackberry Data Plan, I do not think you can add that to your To Go service. To Go is also more expensive, why not just continue with a normal plan?

all i need is text and data. I have another blackberry that i use for work with a monthy account and i just wanted another phone without having to get another plan. I figured i have this perfectly fine bold so why not use it, but this is a little more complicated then i thought.

Im getting conflicting information. last thing i want to do is fry another sim.

The blackberrys use a standard SIM and as stated above it might not be active. The account once detected to have a Blackberry will have a data plan added so you might just leave the account the way it was. If you unlock the phone then you will be able to move to any carrier that supports the phone type. This will allow you to get the best coverage and service level you want.
