Default Simple BES/SQL Question

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

We recently centralised the BES SQL database on seperate SQL cluster boxes. If these boxes were to be taken down (even for 30 mins or so) what would the impact be on the BES?

Would users still be able to send\recieve during this period?

Also, when the SQL cluster comes back online, would any BES services require any action (ie restart etc) or would the reconnection between the BES and SQL be transparent?

Many thanks folks!

BES will continue to function without SQL connectivity for a period of time.
How long depends on the size of your environment, and how "busy" it is.
You'll lose some statistics during the SQL outage, but mail will still flow.

According to RIM employees we've heard speak at WES, there have been instances where large environments have been without SQL connectivity for up to 6 hours.
Your milage may vary, but I think you'd probably be OK with a 30 minute outage.

When SQL comes back up, BES should just simply reconnect on its own and pick up where it left off. At most, you might just ant to restart the Blackberry services on the BES if anything quirky arises when SQL comes back.

penguin3107 - many thanks - thats the answer I was hoping for. Hopefully as you suggest, the BES should just reconnect when SQL comes back online.

Thanks!

Just make sure that you don't try to shut down BES while SQL is unavailable. If you do this, it will start trying to write all sorts of stuff to SQL, which creates more fun when BES restarts next time. Most people seem to be able to get an hour or so without any issues.
