Can the stock browser work with wifi if I don't have the bb service? I am in wifi zones and It can never pick up the signal. Can I use fb and msn just with wifi and not the bb network? Thanks!

First, you must have the blackberry data plan to use blackberry data services. No ifs, ands, or butts. Not on the mobile network, not on wifi, nada.

Second, some people are able to use non-blackberry data on wifi without a blackberry data plan and some are not. Seems to depend on the carrier. I don't know the exact explanation.

EDIT: Set the native browser to hotspot (or wifi) browser as default. If you are able to use wifi without a data plan, that might work for you. But you will not be able to use the native internet browser without a data plan. And without a data plan you will not be able to use the RIM apps written for BlackBerry.

Some carriers will not send the WiFi service book which allows you to use WiFi if you do not have a BB data plan. In the US, AT&T and Verizon have that policy. Have heard T-Mo is considering, but I really doubt they will adopt. Have heard some foreign carriers have the same policy, but I cannot name them. Just going by what I hear, but have not confirmed it.

Just curious.... Do you know for sure the service book is needed to enable it, or is it a service book that blocks it? I don't know. I'm going on what someone on the forum on T-Mobile said about it and about being able to use wifi even with no SIM card in the BlackBerry. I haven't experimented and of course I'm on T-Mobile where it isn't an issue. Just curious about the how of it. (I have no doubt about the why.)

EDIT: I didn't think it through....service book can't block it. No data plan no service book.

Native browser works with wifi connection and can download 3rd party apps OTA and install, however no access to the app store. I get a message saying "currently not supported in your country"

Hi All,

New to BB. IPhone user.
Got 9300 for my daughter, no data plan, she is too young as for my standards. we have Rogers unit on Koodo month to month plan in Canada.

Do I understand it correctly?
Are you saying one can't use WIFI on BB to go on line without the Data Plan?

I have an issue, cant go on line. My router sees the BB as connected at 54/mbps but I cant go on line.
I was thinking, maybe the phone's settings prevent it going on.

Some can and some can't. Seems to be carrier dependent, but I only know what's been discussed on the forum and no personal experience.

But make sure you have set the hotspot (or wifi) browser as the default browser in options. If the default is set to internet browser it is definitely not going to work.
