trooper typing?
Please Login to Remove!
the other day i went to lock my phone with the lock icon. well i noticed it was in a different spot than normal...so i looked to see why. well i have this new icon that i have no idea where it came from. its called "trooper typing". well i clicked on it to see what it was, it opened in the internet browser and it went on to tell me its a 3rd party application and not supported by RIM and blah blah blah. after this long thing about terms and conditions at the bottom it says "i accept" or "i do not accept". well since i dont know what it is and dont care to have it i hit "i do not accept". then it sent me to another page about applications and stuff for the blackberry. well my question is...does anyone know what trooper typing is? and does anyone know how to remove it from the phone? i tried going to options>applications but it doesnt show up. i just want the dumb thing removed...its taking up space. HELP ME PLEASE!!!

It's a little game by Magmic that helps you practice the Pearl's SureType. To remove, my guess would be to locate Trooper Typing in the apps menu, something like:
Options > Advanced Options > Applications
Then click on Trooper Typing and look for Delete option.

Geez, I HATE that carriers are pushing content onto our devices without our consent! I had a minor shitfit when T-Mobile started pushing Facebook to us. It sounds innocuous at first, but it's the trend I worry about. What's next? Advertisement pop-ups? Bad bad bad.

Yep, I agree totally, rambo. AT&T gives you a whole truckload of 'shopping' apps - media, games, themes, graphics, ringtones, crap, crap and more crap. All you can do it hide 'em and complain about it to them, but they don't listen. They see it as their birthright to shove that crap at us.
What I really would like to know is how many n00bs they trick in to shopping at those places...

YEAH! What he said!
I created a folder called ' Bloatware' and moved all the 'launcher' crap icons into it, and then hid the folder.

I had a Moto Q for a while (Windows Mobile - Ugh!) and to get rid of that crapola you had to actually hack the registry! Easier to just sell the friggin' thing!

okay so i found out some more info by googling it. i found another site were it happened to other people. funny thing...it was all VERIZON customers and they all had a pearl. they were saying that it was something verizon pushed and added to your phone if you have a phone that has suretype. so with that being said...i called verizon. the guy i spoke to had no idea what i was talking about and said that verizon doesn't "push" applications out to their customers. so i told him about the website i found all that info on and he looked into it on the same website. he said he would look into it more and call me back. when he called me back he said that he asked around and found out that trooper typing is something that verizon started on july 26, 2008. he said it can be deleted but doesnt recommend it cuz it will most likely show back up. my main concern was it taking up memory b'cuz i dont even want the thing. he said that its just an icon and doesnt use any memory. the only way it would use memory is if you hit accept and downloaded it. so...if you dont want it on your screen..to delete it go to... options>advanced options>service book and then select it and hit the menu bar and then delete. (on mine it was called dynamic VPL trooper typing) i didnt see it at first b'cuz i was just looking for trooper typing. anyways...i hope this helps anyone else that had this happen to them. thanks again to everyone who gave their input!

With the recent stir about Apple's kill switch for the iPhone, there was speculation that the next step would be to push apps to the device. I guess Verizon beat them to the punch.
Regardless of what the Verizon rep said, if it exists on your phone, it's taking up memory. They may consider it insignificant, but it's not THEIR MEMORY, IT'S MINE!
This reminds me of a video review at PhoneArena comparing the Sprint Curve with the Verizon Curve. They gave the Sprint Curve a thumbs up because in their minds, other factors balanced out, and the deciding factor was that Sprint Curve included things like AOL Messenger, Facebook, etc., whereas the Verizon Curve did not. I couldn't help but laugh, because I had the opposite reaction. It's bad enough that PCs come with all this crapware preinstalled - I certainly don't want to have to decrapify my brand new phone. Now it appears that Verizon is sneaking in the back door with some sort of involuntary post-purchase crapification of their customers' equipment.

AT&T doesn't pusk the facebook app/shortcut. My whole family (4 of us w/ BBs) uses AT&T and none of us have the facebook app/shortcut on our phones, hidden or otherwise.

It does seem to be a random phenomenon. I have never been pushed Trooper Typing on any of my Verizon BB's.

Sprint did the same to my Curve. I have Facebook, PocketExpress and all sorts of other crap that I have no interest in using on my phone.

If you delete the service book, it will reappear next time the BB register on the network, that most likely will be next time you pull the battery.

WTH is Trooper Typing...nevermind, I don't care.
As to the ads...I wouldn't mind IF it significantly offset the cost, or if you could opt out.
The crap they're doing now allows neither.
