I heard that the Sidekick is a legend of sorts. I don't think the new Sidekick will make that big of a splash however, given that there is so many slider qwertys from Samsung and LG alone hitting the market with all carriers. LG alone shipped nearly shipped 13 million slider qwerty devices in 2008, an increase of nearly 400% from 2007. In Sprint, they sold as many of the Voyager devices they can bring in.
Some of these new phones are impressive like the Samsung Impression and LG Xenon. They're really not smart phones as they lack an OS like Windows Mobile or Symbian. Its all proprietary OS with a Java API on top. Even in a site that specializes on PDAs and smartphones like Brighthand, the preview/review of Samsung Impression is getting more web hits than those of true smartphones. These new genre of machines pose a threat not just to RIM but all smartphones altogether.
Still, when it comes to email, I would suggest sticking to a smartphone, especially with RIM, though I find the email in other platforms to be nearly just as good. The quality of the email systems in these proprietary phones like the Sidekick, Impression, Dare, Xenon, etc,. are all unknown territory.
