Default YouMail - Personalize your Voicemail

Please Login to Remove!

Last week mobilecrunch had an exclusive post about a voicemail service provider called YouMail. This service allows you to do all sorts of great things with voicemail. It basically replaces your carriers voicemail service. Here is a quick list of features:

* Custom voice greetings per number. (Have one greeting for you boss and another for your buddies).
* Forward Voicemails to your email.
* Access your voicemail online from your computer.
* A bunch of other features (check out the site at youmail.com)
The service currently works with Cingular, Verizon, and T-mobile.

be careful with this! this forwards your phone to their phone number upon no answer. many carriers charge $.20 or more for call forwarding. this means you can get charged .20 per minute for someone to leave a message!!!

i would love to use this since it beeps right after your message but you can get a big surprise when your bill comes....

Default normal airtime usage applies

Sprint charges 20c/min to call forward, but it doesn't work with Sprint. With tmobile, cingular and verizon normal airtime minutes apply to call forward. best bet is to look at your plan to double check.

Seems pretty cool so far. Setting it up was a bit of a hassle, though, becasue I don't have a mic for my laptop (there is a mic on the laptop, but it's bad). I had to set up individual greetings by phone, and there seems to be a problem with the system where after you finish with one contact you can't go back to the main system menu to set up another contact. You have to hang up and call again.

I'll get a mic tonight to try tomorrow to see if it's any easier but so far I like it.

So wait, using this makes it take up my minutes for people to leave me voice mail? And using the default T-Mobile voicemail system does not use up any minutes when people get forwarded to it?

I think the reason its only "compatible" with certain providers is because some only offer call forwarding of all calls, and not call forward no answer transfer - which is whats really needed for this.

I was able to sign up with a Telus account in Canada by claiming that I am a Verizon customer - and I received the confirmation text message with no problem.

Telus does not offer call forward no answer transfer though, so its pretty much useless - plus, I'd be paying long distance to forward my calls to the US.

Loaded it the other night and was able to get everything setup in about 10 minutes. Everything worked as advertised. The forward to email option I believe is a manual process - - from checking your voice mail on line. It would be nice to have the actual voice mail wav file emailed to a specified address if so desired.

Anyway, so far so good.

Yea, I thought it worked like my vonage voicemail. An auto forward feature would be great.

I sent an email in to them asking about that feature... I got a call back from them and they are working on that as a possible future feature.

I've been using them for a couple weeks, and am impressed. I emailed them with a question, and a real person actually called me to answer and make sure I was satisfied!

The only problem I've experienced is if I read the SMS notifying me I have a voicemail but can't check voicemail right away, without the tape icon that VZW's voicemail gives, I forget to check voicemail sometimes. That's my problem, not YouMail's, but it is something to be aware of.

Too, the *73 doesn't seem to work on Verizon Wireless to switch back and forth from YouMail and Verizon voicemail. You're supposed to be able to do that, but . . .

I like to have an icon for a message too. The only other thing that was an issue for me was the voice message SMS did not appear until over an hour later. That happened twice over the last weekend. It does not happen all of the time.
