The greatest disappointment for me is that my Republican party is no longer recognizable.

I am not sure the democratic party is in that much better shape. Bernie did a number on them.

My calculations show the electoral vote as about 310 to 228 assuming New Hampshire stays republican.

I am amused that the news media does not show this number and the actual popular vote totals.

As the senate remained republican I wonder how the media, pollsters and not very smart Hollywood types will explain all this. This was not a close race.

Comments?

It was a totally unexpected blowout. The media didn't want to believe it could happen (there is an excellent column in today's Washington Post about their blind spot) and the pollsters and pundits missed it completely. I heard that even Trump's own team polled that they were ahead In Wisconsin and didn't believe it. The totals aren't too hard to find - the popular vote came up in a Google search.

As one of the Deplorables, now is not the time for gloating, recriminations and payback. There is a lot of work to do. Half the country is unhappy. And half feels that their voices were heard.

If you listen to the news today you will see just about every excuse for the results.
CBS spent about 20 minutes explaining how parents should explain to the poor baby children the results to help with their depression. My local news paper reporters must have been asleep all night because unbelievable they "claimed" the paper was printed too early to have any results for the presidential race but did have all the state and local stuff.
ABC jumped on Trump's wife stating how she will have to learn a lot to be the first lady. They said she will probably not be involved for a few months in anything implying she is clueless. Apparently they don't remember Michele Obama was absent for months also but that was ok.
NBC predicted the stock market would tumble last night. Funny thing is it opened 70 points up. Time will tell where it goes but Wall street wont have the insider anymore it looks like.
MSNBC said it would be tough with a small child in the Whitehouse. Kennedys son must have just looked like a baby and was really in his twenties.

The next few days will be very interesting.

The excuses and in fighting in the Democrat party hasn't even started. Bernie and Warren - both of whom contributed greatly to the rout - will be on MSNBC every night.

FYI

As of 10 a.m. ET, Clinton had amassed 59,299,381 votes nationally, to Trump's 59,135,740 xxx8212; a margin of 163,641 that puts Clinton on track to become the fifth U.S. presidential candidate to win the popular vote but lose the election.

Neither candidate got more than 50 percent of the vote xxx8212; as of 10 a.m. ET, Clinton stood at 47.7 percent and Trump at 47.5 percent.

"Trump crossed the 270 electoral vote threshold at 2:31 a.m. ET with a victory in Wisconsin,"

Source: Hillary Clinton Surpasses Donald Trump In Popular Vote Tally: Shades Of 2000? : The Two-Way : NPR

In terms of the popular vote as opposed to electoral, this was close. Electoral -- no contest, but I personally wouldn't call this a mandate. Pretty evenly split population.

He had coat tails. Very surprising but he carried the entire election.
Does he have a mandate? Let's see what the first 90 days bring...

Actually I think the Republicans have a mandate. The question if they can do anything to move forward and fix some of the issues from the current administration while not making things worse.

For a while yesterday I wondered what would have happened if Clinton would have won with the minimum required electoral college votes. She would not have had a mandate and things would have been interesting.

This morning at work the view has been that Obama was defeated as much as Clinton when you consider the House and Senate are now solid Republican. I wonder what Bernie actually thinks about all this. In the end he helped defeat Clinton too.

Looking at our history there have been some pretty crooked and unqualified people elected. Some of them rose above their backgrounds and did a decent job under the circumstances. I am thinking Truman here. Also I was thinking about the 1948 election yesterday where newspapers had declared Dewey had been elected. Sort of a interesting comparison with current events.

I guess my definition of mandate is based on numerical dominance of the vote -- I'd expect a 60-40 margin in the popular vote before I'd begin to think mandate, and probably 75-25 in the electoral college. But that is just my opinion.

Think of it as a dinner party with 20 guests that split 11-9 in their opinion. That is a 55-45 split. One person in that group changing makes it a dead heat. Therein lies my definition of "mandate" and my belief that we do not have one -- and haven't for quite some time.

I'm amazed. Got to hand it to him, an amateur breaking all the rules and beating the professionals, plus beating the government and non-government forces that were aligned against him. CNN and Washington Post hardest hit.

Still, I don't expect much to change. Not in the long run. Most of the nation is either rent seeking or engaged in protecting themselves against rent seekers, and that number is only growing. Who is president doesn't seem to matter. Which party controls congress doesn't seem to matter.

Sadly I think your more correct than many would believe.

IMHO The gimmie something free attitude is growing. We have people still fighting on social media and wondering what and why. The what and why is a lot of people were frustrated with the current administration and simply voted their feelings. We always will have those who are blind to the reality around them.

Have to laugh at the moving to Canada threats.
Same thing happened when Bush the younger won. Same empty threats.

I see that Amy Shumer has already backed off of her threat. Just a temper tantrum.

They're not going anywhere. Too much money here.

I heard a commentator last night say that "liberals like to freak out." Sad. It appears to be true. Outrage and dissent are cherished rights. Violence is not. Each night of violence makes the election more and more valid and the center that voted for Trump is sickened by what they see.

A very good question.
But she didn't.

I see that Lena Dunham has decided not to move to Canada. The list of people exiting the country continues to shrink.

I just wish it had been a Republican that I could have supported with a clear conscience. That wasn't the case this time.
