I think this phone is pretty average, I can't believe the lack of symbols, no smiley faces, NO exclamation mark, the most common one. I can't believe the phone doesn't ring and vibrate at the same time

Good on ya mate! Your 8100 has an ! On the (qw) key. The ? Is on the (as) key. If you use
BB messenger you will find the smileys you seek.

I think your exclamation mark is on the QW key and your question mark on the AS key. You may want to check this link out: Livelink - Redirection

yes well i did say i had no idea when it came to this phone, being so use to the old style phone. One question tho, how do i use blackberry messenger? please don't send me anymore link as they are just as difficult to understand as the phone, simple explanations would be great. Do i need to be connect to the internet to use BB messenger?

BB Messenger will launch itself. Then you just need the PIN of who you want to connect with. Not completely sure on your model but if you scroll to options and then click status you should be able to locate your pin.
