From what I read, Poynt does NOT unlock the GPS for Google Maps. Instead, it just appears that Poynt uses the GPS to get your position and then invokes Google Maps to display it.

In other words, Poynt is using the GPS and then passing your coordinates to Google Maps. That's nice, but it doesn't really help when you want Google Maps to navigate you somewhere, since Google Maps still thinks you are wherever cell tower triangulation says you are.

Have I got it wrong? I did not read ALL the posts on CB forums.

I have found that when I gps my location with google it is about half a mile away. When I used it thru poynt first it was a direct hit on my block. Plus if I type 7 eleven in google maps it comes up empty. With poynt it shows me all the stores near my location.

That sounds right to me, that also explains how Poynt is able to get Google Maps to work on the Storm while the folks over in Mountain View spin their wheels. Waterloo & Mountain View really need to collaborate together on this....

I couldn't see a buy movie ticket option with the OS .75 and now that I installed the .103, the program doesn't work well.

Oh sorry. On OS .75 The display was fine (full screen with the storm) and good touch screen ability but no option to purchase tickets.
On .103, the display is off and the touch screen features lag a lot. Also the GPS keeps asking to do a search at a new location all the time. No option for buying tickets either on .103.
I hope this clarifies it.

I had posted this on another thread here. When I installed it, I got both the GPS and the triangulated locations (different). That would seem to dispel your argument. The GPS was accurate to within a few feet. I suggest you try it before commenting next time. Also, Google Maps cane up with the correct GPS Functional tag. Directions worked properly as well.

Does anyone use VZW Navigator? How does Poynt compare? I have been using VZW Navigator for quite some time, I have never had a prob and love some of the extra features, but it is a $10 charge every month.

I confirm that it does NOT unlock google maps (3.01) and worse - on the new OS update this app eats through my battery life!

Anyone else notice battery drain after installing this app? Since last week, I noticed my battery hasn't lasted the entire day. Since I've gotten my Storm, I haven't had this issue. (Albeit the Storm is no 8310, as far as batt is concerned.)

I've just started looking at apps I've recently installed, and removing some of the free Betas. Then I come upon this post, and sounded plausible.

The latest version of google maps (3.02) has working gps...I have both and like them both. As long as you
don't keep them running while not using then, your battery should be fine

Ok, so I uninstalled Poynt last night to see how my battery life is impacted. With Poynt installed, my battery would be almost drained by this time in the day (with fairly heavy utilization), but now I'm still showing almost 80% remaining.

Not sure why, as the app itself doesn't appear in my running tasks lists, but based on this little exercise, it does seem to adversely effect my battery usage having it installed...in a big way.

Too bad, as I liked it. Maybe an update will fix it, but for now, I'll stick with Beyond 411
