Yes, and no.

For some it works across the board, and for others GPS is only enabled on BBMaps.

Reading this thread above may make your head hurt... but different users have had different experiences on the Storm.

That is about the closest to the facts that can be said.

@ It is certainly not Google disabling GPS on the Storm, otherwise mine would not work. Maybe Google ONLY disables it for the CDMA network?

I just loaded Poynt and it uses GPS and works. Blackberry maps work. Trapster works. I'm a Verizon customer. I do not use VZ Navigator, I deleted it.

What more can I say? As far as google maps go, why do I need them? I've got two good GPS devices with Maps and Poynt. And Trapster keeps me safe....

Hookbill...I see you have a Storm. How did you get Poynt on it? When I go there via my Storm browser it says that the Storm is not supported at this time.

thanks

With poynt, it doesn't actually enable the GPS in google maps. Point just sends your GPS location to google maps and puts a pin there. You can use that to get directions from where you are, but once you start moving, you're just going to be relying on the cell tower triangulation again.

I have noticed with GM 3.0.1 that when you turn off the radio GM can find your location with GPS just fine and pretty fast. So it has to be a service book, network permission issue.

Go to the Manage Connections icon, uncheck Mobile Network.

I doubt this will help anyone but.... I made several attempts to use GMM with my locked verizon storm changing settings such as location aiding etc. Nothing worked. I also switched the mobile network to gsm as others have said and still I did not recieve a location in GMM. I then had the phone unlocked with verizon. Same results. All the settings I changed did not make a difference except switching to GSM which ofcourse renders the data and phone services unusable.

My take away was this. GMM will only use the GPS on the storm when the phone is unlocked and you are using gsm instead of CDMA.

As someone pointed out earlier, a google represenative has clearly stated this is not a technical problem. Verizon has a restricted list for third party applications that they will not allow to use the gps for the storm and GMM is restricted. He also stated he did not forsee a quick resolution to this problem.

It seemed very clear in reading the google statements that this is a legal issue between vzw and google.

Here's my take...

VZW has not (and will not) release a(ssisted)GPS data. Other carriers don't lock aGPS.

VZW has completely unlocked S(tandard)GPS data. This is what's used by Blackberry Maps and other applications.

GMM is coded to use aGPS. For some reason Google Maps only works w/ aGPS which works on other carriers, but not with VZW.

The thread referred to above has all this info in it, you have to somewhat read between the lines in places to get it... I almost get the impression that Google didn't even know that S-GPS was an option...

In terms of the differences, aGPS is supposedly faster than S-GPS and perhaps more accurate.

Unless of course you have a valid SIM card, like many of us do.

Orange-Netherlands SIM cards operate worldwide, but can only be "topped up" from within the Netherlands (this prevents African, Eastern European, Russian, and Asian criminals from using Dutch numbers for "419" scams).

Conversely my Nomi (UK) SIM card does not work outside the UK.

I'm not going to read every post on this thread, but I'm not understanding when people say that GPS won't work on the GoogleMaps program. I had a problem with the original version not allowing my VZNav to work, but I just downloaded the new version and it shows my location and will navigate if I want it to. So tell me what you all are saying it won't do.
