I don't believe he was referring to our willingness to defend the rights of people in this world who seek freedom, that would be an ignorant and careless statement to make.
While we are more than willing to fight wars to spread democracy, we are NOT always willing to look past the sterotypes that have been put forth in the past. Is it and absolute FACT that ALL black people live on welfare and don't work, or that they get into college easier? Is it a absolute FACT that EVERY hispanic in this country is ILLEGAL, and that we pay for ALL their medical care? I think not, but how often do you hear the statement that starts, 'all those____are the same all they do is____ This is where he makes his point, and to a certian extent he is correct.

I think its a stupid statement but it has nothing to do with calling soldiers cowards...it has to do with race. And there is always more work to be done on that issue in the USA.

But I do think it was a dumb statement, but it was saying that people in the US are afraid to have a major conversation about race in the US. I don't think its anything to fire someone over.

So every American who gave his / her life for this country and for the advancements this country has made is / was a coward.... That's what I heard him say....

He should be relieved of his duties immediately!

Dumb comment, but you are stretching it out Lunk, into way more than it is. He was referring to conversation about race not happening because of fear of being embarrassed, thereby making "them" cowards.

Lunk - really you heard him say that?

"Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial, we have always been and we -- I believe continue to be in too many ways essentially a nation of cowards,"

so where does he mention soldiers or veterans? I agree it was stupid but I think your blowing it a little out of proportion.

He is in his position (the 1st African American to hold his spot) because of the blood that was shed by our soldiers as they stormed Normandy, fought the battle of the bulge, ect.... they shed their blood for us to be and remain free and for the advancement he now enjoys....

He did not get where he is today because we are a nation of cowards... He got where he is today because we are the opposite....

The clown needs to go!

You are correct he is there, all of us who live in America are here, as a direct result of the sacrifice of our forefathers.

Have you ever heard the phrase 'great white flight'? that is the coward he is referring to.

Lunk - he would not be the first Black AG is the nation would have handled race better in the past (plenty of competent Black AG candidates in the past).
I still see no correlation between soldier / veterans and what he said.

The bottom line is that he is enjoying his success because we are a brave nation that has moved forward... If we were a nation of cowards he would NOT be in the position he currently holds....

He is obviously NOT the person to move this nation forward.... He is stuck in the 1930's...

A nation of cowards would have never progressed to the point where he has the position he has....

I think your stuck on the notion that being brave is solely about fighting wars or defending freedom, he makes not mention of any of that, the issue mentioned is race.

well to each there own.

Lunk made the very valid point in his last post that 'bravery' made possible the fact the AG is african-amercian. The people who started the Civil rights movement were brave, they did not fight in a war, but they were by no means cowards.

It was indeed a stupid statement. However to say that he was talking about veterans is a bit of a stretch imo.

Where did I say veterans / soldiers?

I mentioned a few wars yes, and IMHO he is calling them cowards also... But, there has been far more done within the USA for his advancement and there have been plenty who shed blood within the USA, and there have been plenty who have suffered for him to have the spot he has now... For him to make such a statement is a slap in their face...

Again, my .02

Lest we not forget....

*snip*

The American Civil War was the greatest war in American history. 3 million fought - 600,000 paid the ultimate price for freedom. And a war for freedom it was. The desire for freedom traveled deeper than the color of skin and farther than the borders of any state.

American Civil War - Home

They were also cowards according to him.... I beg to differ!!!

i think the people are pulling out of this statement more than what he meant, the same way others are pulling more from that cartoon than was orignially intended.

Wirelessly posted (BB 850)

Not the case here...

I hear what he said and he obviously has forgotten the amount of blood that was shed by these cowards that allowed him to be where he is today...

That is all....

Again, this is stretching the meaning of the comment. His comments are directed entirely at the current state of racial equality et al. He is suggesting that people need to "get over" their personal fears of embarrassment so that progress can continue. The way I read his comments is, individuals that took part in the history of racial struggle, wether they were involved in wars or civil action, did their part without question or concern for themselves, and at present simpe "embarassment" is slowing progress, thus making people "cowards".
