Default keep getting No Service

I bought a cell phone at a HamFest that had an IT profile on it that disabled the phone service. I updated the OS to the latest I found on BlackBerry's web site after wiping the device. Everything works fine.

I live out in the middle of nowhere, so I am used to the cell phone losing signal when I am at home. However, on my other phones, as soon as a signal was available, the phone would connect. This BlackBerry doesn't do that. If I drive into the city, it continues to say "No Signal". To get it to lock on to the signal, I have to turn Wireless Off and then back on. That just doesn't seem right.

Oh, BTW - this is a Cingular phone with an AT&T sim card.

I contacted AT&T, and they updated the IMEI number on record to match that of the BlacKBerry. It is still doing the same thing...

Any Ideas? I hate to have to go back to the Nokia...

Could be any number of problems. The 7290 is pretty old, so most likely, it is the device itself. If you can't return it, then you have a nice paperweight.

Have you tried a battery pull? With the device on, pull the battery for about 30 seconds or so, then replace and let the device reboot? Any changes?

I did and no change. I even tried a different 7290 with the same results. It's like if there is no signal for a certain length of time, the BB just gives up until you manually turn the radio off and back on...
