Question Compared to Pearl, this Curve's ball rattles - normal?

Please Login to Remove!

I just got my Curve today. When I use the trackball, it makes noise. I don't know how to describe it - just the sounds of the resistance as it moves. It seems to work fine.

I would not say it is loose.

My Pearl was silent. Is this noise normal or should I be taking it back?

Thanks!

Oh DUH!

Thanks. Now I just notice the apparent cheapish-ness of this ball compared to the Pearl.

It still makes a bit more mechanical noise - it's not silent. Normal?

I don't know I haven't used a curve. If it's bugging you I would go the store and compare. If your in the curve now you should update your profile. It will help others here to know your current model.

Good Luck!

My wife has a Pearl and I have a Curve, both bought at the same time, not even a week ago. I just gave them both a thorough testing (held them up one at a time to each ear, then both at the same time, then switching ears ) and I honestly cannot hear or feel any difference between the two.

I noticed that the Curve's trackball seems a little looser than the Pearl's.

I had the Pearl also and know what the OP is talking about. The older Pearls were quieter, its seems as though RIM put in a rougher surfaced trackball into the Curve and the newer model Pearls. Hence the reason jet can't hear or feel a difference. Jet I'm guessing your wife has a newer model Pearl?

I went to a T-Mobile store tonight and grabbed the two Curves they had on display. They each have a bit of the scrubbing sound. So, I came home and starting customizing up my new toy.

Thanks for the info here though! It settles me a bit after spending a fortune on this phone.

I've noticed the difference between Pearl and Curve. My Pearl had a much smoother trackball comparing to my Curve.

ATT 8300 and 8310 and Pearls have real smooth trackballs, as well as 8800 and 8830's. The 8320 has the resistance trackball. Maybe Rim skimped a bit on the balls for 8320 to put in Wifi?

I really envy the smoother trackballs, but then everyone on ATT that used mine says they like mine better.

My husband and I both noticed that our Pearls had smoother trackballs and our Curve trackballs both have a "grittiness" to it. No biggie though, a lot of people have said it gives them a little more control.

It is an 8100, brand spanking new, but I am not sure when it was actually manufactured. The 'grittiness' description is perfect, though. The trackballs on my Curve and her Pearl definitely have that slight gritty feel to them.

I'm on my second regular 8300 Curve (had one replaced under warranty) and there is definitely an issue with the trackballs. On my first one, it was rough and really loud. With the audible click turned off, it sounded awful. My current one is much better. That said, I have friends with Sprint and Verizon 88xx's, and theirs are much quieter on average than the Curves I have seen.

On a somewhat related note, my current phone has a pile of dust under the screen. After a bit of complaining, AT&T is replacing it with an 8310! If the trackball is loud, I'll just swap in the one from my old phone.

Noticed that my Curve trackball made a noise when used, which eventually settled down with continued use.

This is how I bought mine: I tested the Pearl in a store, liked it a lot, then I researched and found about the Curve, tested it in a store and bought it. But I really noticed some difference in the trackballs. Then I went back to the stores and tested another few Pearls and Curves. Confirmed: the Pearls really have a better trackball. The Curve's rattles and sort of "skids", I mean, it won't scroll if I roll the ball too fast or too slowly, so I don't really have a "medium" speed, which sums up to less control.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.0.9751/204; U; en))

My trackball has always made the rattling noise (I've had it for nearly a month). So far it hasn't become "smoother." My other problem, which I posted on another thread but never received a response, is that my trackball seems to have sunk down into the device. It no longer sits up as high. To get it to "click" I need to press it nearly flush with the device. Has anyone else experienced this? Is my device defective? Is there a fix? Any help would be appreciated....

I use a Pearl and my boss has a Curve. I did notice that the trackball on his Curve has more of a "skid/click" feel to it even after turning off the Click sound on his. He has only had it for about a month though.

I have a Curve on the way and expect that it will also have the more skid-ish trackball.

My Pearl's trackball also sunk in a few months ago where it no longer sits as high as it used to. It still works but definitely liked it better before.

Thanks for replying -- it's good to hear that it isn't just me who noticed this issue. I'm wondering if I should return my 8310 for a new one (I've got a few days left of my 30-day return window with AT&T), or if I should just accept that the trackball now sits this low and deal with it. I'm also interested if anyone knows a way to fix it myself if it gets worse down the road.

Default Trackball on Curve

I purchased a new Curve, replaced it due to lint under screen in the first 30 days. Rec'd replacement from TMO. Both have the "loose" feel to the trackball. My friend has a Pearl, very smooth roll and feel, the ball itself feels different too. Does anyone know if we can swap the assembly between the two? If so, I would want to find the "Old" Pearl part as the previous threads seem to suggest RIM has changed the Pearls trackball. As a further confirmation, I went to 2 different parts sites and the part number was the same for the Curve and the Pearl. Only difference was some sort of ring the Pearl has in it's assembly that the Curve does not.
