I have the ATT and mine is not smooth at all. I had the 8800 and the 8820 and they both were smooth, but my 8310 is not smooth at all.

I've had several AT&T 8300's / 8310's (dust under screen issues) and every single one of them has had the "scraping noise from trackball" issue, including my current one.

It is NOT the actual trackball itself spinning inside the removable housing. If you take the trackball assembly out and spin the ball, it should move smoothly with no noise at all. It only makes the noise when seated inside the phone.

The logical conclusion is that the noise is generated from the 4 rollers where they touch the 4 black pads in the phone. Either the rollers or the pads, or both, are not completely smooth.

If anyone is concerned about the trackball assembly being "loose", ie, moving around slightly within the plastic ring while seated, you can cut a sliver of a business card (make sure it's not too wide so that it doesn't touch the rollers) and slide it between the top of the trackball assembly and the edge of the trackball assembly opening on the phone. It should wedge in snugly and prevent the assembly from moving around while allowing proper trackball operation.
