9700 Hot and almost dead battery

I checked my phone periodically while at work. At one point when I checked it, I had almost half (or more) left of the battery. About an hour or an hour and a half later I go back to the phone, and its VERY warm and the battery indicator is almost empty, with one yellow bar left.
Other problem I noticed was the data icon in the upper right hand corner was constantly going off, like not stopping. I checked the open apps and there was nothing open that normally isn't.
I did a battery pull, and even before I saw the home screen the data icon showed up again. After about 5-10min the icon stopped flashing and seemed to of stopped transmitting.
Any ideas?
