Default BIS Browsing and Wi-Fi

Please Login to Remove!

Ok, I'm hoping that what I have learnt earlier in another post that I had going about browsing on the BB and Wi-Fi has changed on the BB9000.

Is there anyway to get the Bold on a BIS plan to browse the Internet via Wi-Fi. I have Wi-Fi at home and at the office and I can't seem to get the device to browse via Wi-Fi even though I'm connected. What then is the purpose of Wi-Fi on the device if it won't use the faster connection?

It doesn't really seem like you are connecting correctly. To validate that you are on Wi-fi, connect then turn off your radio on the phone, if you can surf with it off you are on Wi-Fi, if not you are not properly connected.

Not only that, if you are connected, your WIFI icon should be white (depending on your theme) and not grayed out.

I am on the wifi. I see it connected. I however just noticed that I have a - instead of a tick even though it says its connected. I will have to check on my wifi setup and get back to you all.

That means it's not fully connected. That happens to me sometimes; I think the Wi-Fi is pretty finicky.

The grayed icon or "-" next to the wifi network you're connected to means your are not connected to the blackberry infrastructure. To verify what's connected, in Manage Connections select Services Status. It will tell you how you're connected.

I find my wifi loses full connectivity at times. I either re-power my wireless router and/or resend the service books. According to RIM's documentation, the wifi must pass IP port 443 via SSL to connect to the blackberry infrastructure, BIS/BES.

Gotta tell you - the BB Forums community rocks - I was having the same issues, just a "-" and showing I was connected to my network - but no dice - so I reloaded my service books and now I have the white icon and am on wi-fi again.

That's what the forum is all about - BB owners helping other BB owners. Enjoy.

Re-sending the service books did not work for me. Mine was working fine for a while. I didn't change anything, then all the sudden it quit working. All I get is the greyed wifi symbol.

I've re-sent service books, re-booted the router, re-booting the bb. Deleted the wireless connection and re-added it. Nothing seems to work. :(

Not sure why it's not working for you. I suggest going to a Starbucks or other AT&T wifi hotspot to see if it connects. If so, something in your local network is preventing connecting to blackberry on port 443 SSL.

Login to your BIS and click Send Service books on the left menu.

Found this on another forum - for those who can't get the wifi icon to turn white (fully connected):

1. turn off the wifi connection in manage connections
2. options->advanced options->host routing table - highlight Wifi[60] - hit menu key and select register
3. turn on wifi connection

This will register your bold via wifi on the blackberry network. And it should continue to connect in auto mode.

Ok bump this thread back up, i tried to do this.. ^^ And when I go to host routing table and hit menu the only thing that comes up is register now, and close.

When I click register now it says registration message queued. It will be sent once data coverage is available.

The (-) symbol and grey WiFi doesn't mean you can't connect to WiFi. All that means is that the BB network cannot connect through that connection. As long as you see your WiFi name (i.e. Home or Linksys), then you will be able to connect to the iNet using WiFi, whether it's (-) or a green checkmark.

Go to Manage Connections and disable your mobile network. Can you connect to the iNet after that?
